this movie's gotten some terrible reviews, so i didn't expect much going in — cheesiness, predictability, and awkward main character aside, i actually did end up enjoying it.
i don't know enough to comment on the film's accuracy where Samoan culture was concerned, and there were definitely some inaccuracies where the tattooing aspect was involved, but ... man, it was just pretty fun all around. it won't change your life, but it was eerie enough in some spots, and a very inventive premise.
Excellent interviews – enlightening material, good editing, nice "flow". As a diehard Metallica fan, I didn't really expect to learn much, but I found myself pleasantly surprised!
Not a great movie, but it did leave me feeling curious about what it could have been like with a bigger budget, more time, and better editing/production.
This whole thing felt like a mish-mash of tropes —
tortured artist experiencing psychotic break, nymphet babysitter, sapphic seductress, child/cult abuse, "sexy but vengeful", dissociative identity disorder, mental regression
— thrown haphazardly together. It's quite sloppy in acting and plot execution, and I found the characters unlikeable, unrelatable, and plain old irrational.
It's a shame, because I feel like the repetitive fixation on youth/beauty, loss of reality, and the relationship between Mary and Grace could have been something great... but alas, it didn't pan out.
A real tearjerker, in the best way possible. Such an honest look at longevity in rock 'n roll, the difficult decisions that must be made along the way, and what it means for a three-man band to finally call it quits after forty years.
May Neil rest in peace - he will be sorely missed.
A much more poetic and cohesive follow-up to its predecessor, American Juggalo (2011), though I find myself wishing it focused more broadly on Juggalo culture and customs.
1/3: Nicolas Cage is a badass combatant of evil
1/3: Nicolas Cage is an excellent employee
1/3: Nicolas Cage is a pinball wizard
I can't speak to the actual quality of the movie (clichés abound, highly predictable, some slightly poor/stereotyped characterization)... but I enjoyed it immensely, and that's enough for me. Solid thumbs up all the way. The cleaning montages are incredibly satisfying, too.
Bizarre, bloody, and very transparently created with shock value and controversy as the main objective. My main complaint is that the Human Larvae segment is so excessive and so much longer than the others -- the Ovarian Eyeball or the Rebirth segments were probably my favourites, but they seemed like short, conceptual interludes in comparison.
At the end of the day, I didn't love it... but I didn't hate it, either. The narration was interesting, and there's something to be said for the aesthetic value and editing.
so many gaping plot holes, huge logic jumps, and it's chock-full of terrible "2005-esque" editing... but it does bring up some interesting philosophical questions about public/private sphere, consent, and the degree to which sexual deviancy is considered acceptable or inacceptable.
it's a pretty "fake-deep" movie with way too many choppy flashbacks and WAY too much yellow tint... however, i can concede that Alex O'Loughlin's performance was phenomenal, and it was a fairly interesting premise.
To preface, I am anorexic - I've been through inpatient and outpatient treatment, tube feeding, weight restoration, therapy, the whole shebang.
With that in mind, this movie was ... an interesting experience. There were a few moments that rang true to my experience in treatment (
Megan's pregnancy, the vomit under the bed, daily weigh-ins...
) and several more that did not. Half of the characters were woefully underdeveloped, the treatment setting was rather unrealistic for a group home, and the romance subplot didn't make sense at all. Though Collins gave a good performance, even that couldn't make up for the lacklustre ending.
Cute, funny, and 95 minutes long! Kostanski's script is witty, utilizes clichés well, and even the child actors are quite competent. It's got plenty of suitably (and comedically) gory moments, plus some creature designs that are wonderfully reminiscent of 80s/90s sci-fi gems. I highly recommend!
A profoundly sweet movie that focuses less on a passionate romance and more on the messy, chaotic journey we call life.
Overall, a wonderful experience - funny yet slightly profound, fantastic cast, no cheesy fix-its, and a deviation from most boring rom-dram clichés.
This movie most certainly does not pass the Bechdel test.
However, it's a fun, action-packed adventure with a very inventive premise and even better design - though it lacks substance in many ways (and the romance subplot is just deplorable), the CGI really is quite incredible, and the various monsters are wonderful. Excellent gore as well. Even though it plays into far too many clichés, it has some very redeeming points.
(For the record, I watched the US English dub version - voice acting is not great. Yikes.)
A bad movie, plain and simple. I genuinely do not recommend it to anyone.
I will concede that Wesley Snipes and RJ Mitte put on fairly decent performances, but the script they were dealt may as well have been cut-and-pasted together out of action movie clichés. None of it makes sense, none of the characters are especially likeable, and its attempts at creating tension fall absolutely flat. I'm a person who enjoys bad movies, but even I can't find the silver lining in this one.
The weakest of the three Ginger Snaps movies, as far as I'm concerned. The film's treatment of historical issues (racism, misogyny) is clumsy at best, as are its massively stereotypical portrayals of Indigenous characters. It's completely missing the spark of humour from the first, or the dark twists and turns of the second.
That said, Nathaniel Arcand's performance is commendable. It's also a much more bearable movie if you view it as fantasy rather than "historical fiction".
Great movie - one that I'll be thinking about for weeks afterward, I'm sure. Solid acting, compelling characters, and excellent stylistic choices all around. I can't recommend it highly enough.
So absolutely stupid and homemade that you can't help but to keep watching. If you liked Hobo With A Shotgun (2011), then maybe this will be the one for you!
A solid, no-holds-barred film that deviates from most other zombie movies I've seen.
There were a couple moments where acting fell short, but I'm more than willing to overlook these in exchange for a cast with such stellar Indigenous representation - I was especially taken with performances by Brandon Oakes and Kiowa Gordon, and I can say that I'm greatly looking forward to seeing more films from Jeff Barnaby. I highly recommend it, especially for Canadian horror fans.
Quel film incroyable ... À mon avis, peut-être mon film préféré de Marc-André Grondin. Not sure why it's received so many poor reviews. Sure, the plot lacks in originality, and there's admittedly very little backstory, but I consider that to be part of its charm; I enjoy movies that make me think. If every character involved had been a survival expert, then it would have ended up as a typical, run-of-the-mill « zombie killer » action movie, and I'm glad it wasn't.
Excellent acting, striking artistic visuals, and some incredibly tense moments. The language is also quite uniquely québécoise ... I can't really say, but my best guess is that maybe some of its beauty became lost in translation for anglophone viewers.
Fantastic atmosphere, great soundtrack... The film's message about greed is clear, but it also incorporates more nuanced themes along the lines of family, duty, and sacrifice. Highly recommend.
Fun enough, but lacking in depth. Compared to the original, there's next to no character development - by the end of the movie, I still couldn't recall three of the main characters' names, which is really saying something.
Additionally, the film itself is quite transparent in its incorporation of contemporary culture and "wokeness", but does so in a way that comes across as somewhat out of place; there is a scene where Tabby (the film's Black protagonist) brings up issues of racial injustice, and then the narrative completely switches topics and the matter is never brought up again. (Odd.)
There's very little emphasis on the actual witchcraft involved, which is disappointing.
Overall, I'd say this movie bites off more than it can chew. Perhaps it would be better received by a younger audience; as it is, I found myself longing for the grit and unhinged darkness of the original.
A good, fun movie - it'll never be a classic, but it holds up over time, and features one of my favourite 80s movie villains... Gene Simmons' brief feature sells the movie for me, as do the various band posters and memorabilia in Eddie's room. Despite a few slow parts, it's a great halfway-horror flick, and perfect for Halloween night.
Quite a good performance on Spacey's part... but if you have any background knowledge in the field of psychological health, you may find its glaring inaccuracies hard to overlook.
Overall, I have a fairly neutral opinion of the film.
