Delightful movie. Perfect near-sendoff of Peter Sellers. The blooper reel in the credits was an odd choice, indeed. I’m all about a win-win though. Stop the movie before the credits roll, but go back later and watch the blooper reel. It’s hilarious. And if anything, the message is pretty clear: it’s a comedy. Don’t take it too seriously.
Loved it. Great cast, songs, and dancing numbers, with a lot of humor. I wouldn’t put it near Singin in the Rain, but I only mention that to counter other reviewers here. Highly recommend, especially for Gene Kelly fans.
Loved this. Hilarious. Tons of heart. No cliche downfall of the Star, just a fun ride. The cast is great, Eddie is at his best, but Wesley Snipes stood out the most for me. Highly recommend.
It’s ridiculous, as expected, but worth a watch if you love the interviews (and the bloopers at the end), which is all this movie is - an excuse to compile a bunch of “...Two Ferns” interviews into a movie. It starts as a mockumentary, but after the first scene it never sticks to that format, which is probably because it would have meant more clever writing, which this movie doesn’t have. It’s probably about 10 or 15 minutes too long, since the story is really unimportant (Zack makes a deal with Will Ferrell to do several shows/interviews in just 2 weeks so he can get his own late night talk show). So if time is of essence to you, just fast forward to the interviews and credits/bloopers at the end. One last critique: Will Ferrell a good actor when he wants to be. But too often he just goes for what HE thinks is funny and not what would be funny for the story. He’s just over the top Will Ferrell in this and not believable at all. Every other actor in the movie is taking their part seriously, so his performance is totally out of place. I look forward to the day when he actually takes a comedic role seriously again, like he did in Elf.
I disagree with HellOui’s review. We always assumed Jesse would be ok, riding into the sunset, because he had been through so much hell. But that’s just it: after what he had been through, he deserved a better ending. This is exactly what that is. And does it so perfectly. And if nothing else, it’s an absolute joy to be in that universe with Jessie for 2 hours. Necessary and I loved every minute.
Short and sweet documentary, covering his entire music career, but it’s odd that they don’t even mention his film acting career. Also odd, while the doc’ is filled with his hit songs, they never play Thank God I’m a Country Boy, which is what the film is named after.
Am I really the only one who's seen this movie, here? It's a very good, honest, a little brutal at times, but important documentary about racial segregation in the South. Centered around a group of guys who all played in the championship little league game, one team was black, the other team was white. Interesting to hear from both sides and how they were raised. Ultimately, very tragic to hear from the black men who grew up in the 1950s in the South.
I'm a big Star Wars fan, but I missed this one when it came out in 1987 (I was 14, so I don't know why I missed it). Just watched it the other day and... ugh. I love dumb and funny, but this is just dumb. Doesn't hold up for new viewers, like me (and my friend - same boat: same age as me, loves Star Wars). Some jokes are still decent, but mostly it's not funny, although Rick Moranis is always fun to watch.
Excellent full-length documentary that was made for the 1998 collector’s edition DVD for the film (still included on recent Blu-rays). Features original on-set interviews with the main cast and crew members of the movie (sans Frank Whaley and Gaby Hoffman) as well as new interviews with director Robinson, composer Horner and various others from the cast. Dives deep into the entire history of the making of the film, the soundtrack, the black Sox scandal, and the reception it received when released. Highly recommend for fans of the film.
I just watched this for the first time (been on my watchlist for a long time). I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I expected it to be more corny with the angels, but they weren’t really a part of the story (just the main angel and his relationship with the coach/main character). Highly recommend if you haven’t seen it and especially if you’re a baseball movie fan.
UPDATE: I created my own, exhaustive list: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/baseball+movies+and+documentaries/tomreagan/
Well, since this seems like a comprehensive list of all Baseball movies (sans documentaries), here's a list of ones that should be on this list:
(I'd be happy to add them myself if that were possible)
42 (2013)
Babe Comes Home (1927)
The Benchwarmers (2006)
The Bronx is Burning (2007)
Casey at the Bat (1927)
Chasing 3000 (2010)
The Fan (1996)
The Final Season (2007)
Long Gone (1987)
A Mile in His Shoes (2011)
Million Dollar Arm (2014)
Mr. 3000 (2004)
Pastime (1990)
The Perfect Game (2009)
The Phenom (2016)
Soul of the Game (1996)
Sugar (2008)
Summer Catch (2001)
Touching Home (2008)
Undrafted (2016)
The Winning Team (1952)
I loved this movie and was completely engaged until the layers of convoluted plot twists. It’s just fiction and entertainment, but it’s hard to believe that so many of the characters could pull off such a scheme and then cover it up with another story (at least one character tries this). That said, the final question of morality and “what would you do?” made up for what I had a problem with. Great ending, albeit, a bleak one.
I'm a huge fan of baseball movies and Gene Kelly, so I've waited far too long to watch this one. It's an entertaining gem - funny, decent songs, a lot more baseball than I expected (I expected more stage-show performances), and Kelly is fun to watch.
I disagree with caley's review on here - the song that mentions "turns out she was 11" was just a funny line that rhymes (and it's 1949 ;-) - it's not as if the song is ABOUT kissing children. Esther Williams had to do a swimming scene because Busby Berkeley directed it (she was known for her elaborate synchronized "aqua ballets", which Berkeley directed). I was actually waiting for her to perform one of those iconic numbers.
I was an extra on a few productions, so I had to check this out. Better than I expected. A charming little film about “little people” in Hollywood (I mean that with love). All of them are unique in their own way. Although they didn’t include anyone within the 18-25 year old demographic (that an agent in the film admits is the most popular among casting agencies). (For the record, over a period of one year, I was in four productions in Northern California. I was 23/24 years old. My claim to fame was a sniper in the terrible Travolta/Hoffman film, Mad City. I have since retired from Hollywood.
As a loyal fan of Friends, it was tough to watch Aniston play such a pathetic character, but she’s very good - I didn’t see any of her characteristics the actress is usually known for. The movie as a whole is enjoyable, definitely has a great message, and while it’s predictable at times, it was nice to see that the “mean girl” cliches were not a part of the plot.
Not a very good movie. Several over-the-top performances by actors who just want to play either totally goofy/class clown or just angry, especially the coach. They just come off as annoying and unlikable characters. There are some funny parts, but not many. What I did find unique and interesting is that the entire movie takes place during one single game. I can’t think of another baseball movie that is like that. And I mean, from the first scene to the last. (Sans some quick flashback scenes/montage at the end).
It’s about exactly what I expected, and that’s a good thing. I was worried, from the prologue, that it was just going to be people telling their stories without any photos or video as proof. But there’s a little bit of everything. Some re-enactments (with a scary Bill Murray mask - don’t worry it’s only for a few stories), some videos and some great photos. I would say just about all of them are entertaining. Especially after the credits as another reviewer here mentioned. Highly recommend for any Murray fan.
Pointless plot. For 3/4 of the movie, the protagonist is searching for her dad, which seems to be this amazing mystery and dark secret that everyone is afraid to tell her the truth (did he flee? Is he hiding? Is he dead?). She almost dies trying to find the truth. The final reveal is supposed to be shocking, but it’s not. Besides, after browsing other movies on Netflix soon after I watched this, I came across “The Lovely Bones” and realized THAT’S the movie I meant to watch.
Huge steaming pile of crap, not worthy of ABBA’s hits. I love Meryl Streep but she can barely sing and Pierce Bronson is downright embarrassing. Terrible casting. Sorry, but ABBA deserves better. Much better.
I thought I would hate this movie once I realized the entire film is from the POV of webcams, Google searches, FaceTime cams and other various surveillance-type cameras. But the story was incredibly interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat.
Disappointed. He’s an interesting character, for sure, but I was hoping for a lot more footage and stories from his days in the majors. This film mostly takes place in present day, centered around a series of games he plays in Cuba with an independent league of middle-aged dudes. Not a lot of content there, except to fill space in this low-budget documentary.
It’s a decent family movie for kids aged 6-10 who like baseball. But for anyone else, it’s corny AF. Feels like a made for TV Hallmark movie (but with minorities - because Hallmark movies are 99.9% white people). If it wasn’t based on a true story, I would have hated it.
I'm a loyal Tarantino fan, ever since Reservoir Dogs, and I loved Django Unchained... BUT... ugh... This is my least favorite of his (until this, it was Jackie Brown - but I didn't hate it).
The Ugly: Really liked the first half, but just about hated the second half. I thought the "twist" was ridiculous, which made the entire movie/plot ridiculous and pointless, IMO. Not to mention, EXTREMELY hard to believe.
1. How the hell could the outlaws POSSIBLY clean up all that blood and the mess they made after they killed the SIX residents of the cabin? and 2. Why was Channing Tatum's character hiding under the cellar? Other than a cinematic twist? Would he have been recognized by John Ruth? (Kurt Russell)
The Bad: Also, I'm a huge fan of Ennio Morricone, but I don't remember hearing much from his score except for the beginning. Final gripe: shot in 70mm, I was expecting lots of landscape and beautiful scenary. 90% of this movie takes place inside a CABIN! And when they're outside, they're in land covered completely by SNOW!
The Good: QT delivered his trademark poetic dialogue - my favorite was the letter from Lincoln. Loved the cast and performances (especially Jennifer Jason Leigh - Tarantino sure has a knack for giving out Oscar-worthy roles, doesn't he?).
