The movie depicts a few days of a man who is dishonest, womanizer, liar, freeloader but intellectual. It is also sad that some of the audience sees the guy as an anti-hero. No no! This guy is no Raskolnikov my friend, he is a manipulative prick and if you are a wannabe that's sad for you.
Although the characters showed in a bit of cartoonish exaggeration the basics are truly accurate.
And the sequel starts with the opening scene in which Johnny f.cks Sandra on the sofa when Louise comes in.
Seems like there are two main viewpoints regarding this movie.
1 - Too much single sequence scenes, too much walking, boring, long etc.
2 - Timeless masterpiece.
First of alI I need to admit that the movie is a pretty difficult one to watch. Difficult in terms of both cinematography and theme. In contrary to the slowness, the viewer gets tired catching the technique or the theme.
I can't recommend this movie to everybody. One must enjoy to see so much fine tuned technical aspects (Tarr seems to be a master in attention to detail) or should be deeply into existential concerns.
Regarding the long shots. Yes, they are long, however they are intentionally long. That is the way director conveys the feeling that he wants you to be in. That may not be your cup of tea.
The only part that distracted me was the hospital scene. I understand that, acting details of such an action scene is not director's top priority in such a movie, however the action going around throughout the scene was a bit lousy.
As a final word, is the skeleton in Leviafan the same whale? Who knows... ;)
It is interesting how "Dead Man" became the most popular movie of Jarmusch. For my personal taste it is one the weakest movies of him along with Ghost Dog.
Unfortunately after all the hype I can comfortably rate the movie as overrated. Nice theme-mediocre scripting and nice cinematography-mediocre directing.
Andrey Zvyagintsev is a top-class director of our time. This time the script, directing and cinematography is not at extremes however the characters are tailored with such craftsmanship. This movie is a product of lifetime observation. There are such fine details regarding characters and every single conversation or behavior shown reveals another aspect of that person.
The effort to stress all those paintings of Vincent is great. The animation technique is nice as well. On the contrary I find the script and theme a bit weak. Nonetheless a should see...
After such a cult prequel it should be annoyingly difficult to execute such a movie. Villeneuve made it, not in great form but made it.
Although tons of possible challenges, the worst part of the movie was Harrison Ford as expected. He acted like he had no idea what was going on.
---spoiler---
Camera perspective gets further away from the village church in each scene as the scenarios told by villagers get further away from the facts!
---spoiler---
This movie is one of the most intense movies. A full package with full of emotions and concepts related to human nature. Much like Bergman's Viskningar och rop in this regard.
