An excellent film, one of Cronenberg's best; it really is a tragedy picture rather than horror. Sure, there's a lot of gore and a scare or two, but the true heart of this movie is a man possessed with his own obsession, consumed and then destroyed by it. It's really very sad.
I didn't like this one very much. They concentrated too much on the racing. The characters were pretty thin (or at least thinner than those in the 1946 version), and the plot much less interesting. It pales in comparison to the original.
I just can't stand the writing in this movie; it struck me as being well-filmed and reasonably well-acted and such, but the voice-over was very poorly conceived, I thought.
I wholeheartedly agree with Shaunage. Throwaway characters, dreadful writing- anything onscreen that doesn't involve giant monsters fighting giant robots is worthless. But damn those robot fights were awesome.
True, it wasn't about the existence of God, (although I feel it should've been; isn't that the most important part of religion?) but it provided a highly biased, very unfair, totally BS ridicule. Some of it was funny and deserved, but the unfairness and one-sidedness of Maher was overwhelming. I like Bill Maher. I enjoy his show and his stand-up shows. But I disagree with him frequently, most often on the topic of religion.
phantometal: (some, emphasis on some) religions are not ridiculous, especially not to those who believe in them. Saying that a religion is ridiculous is itself arrogant.
Really terrible. Occasionally funny, but the characters are thin, empty, and unrealistically childish. I don't think I should use Rotten Tomatoes to gage how good movies are anymore.
My opinion will certainly be disagreed with, but I didn't like this one, or even Paisan for that matter. Rome, Open City is a masterpiece, but this film I found to be predictable and very pessimistic, in a way that betrays the true spirit of great neorealist films.

This along with Le Samourai is the best Melville. A gorgeous war film where every characters' deep sense of regret and remorse is felt.Movie comment on Stalker
