I really hate this movie. It has an awful message that "perfect people" are still the standard, but you can be loved anyway. It ends up reinforcing the stereotype it tries to dismantle.
I think you have to be a Wes Anderson fan already to genuinely enjoy this movie. It was beautifully shot, well acted and captured innocence, adventure, and nostalgia brilliantly. But every line of dialog is utterly flat. Not a single emotion is possessed among the entire cast, except perhaps the villain. When no one in the film cares, I don't either. Welcome to Wes Anderson's world.
Holy cow I wanted to slap this movie. Quirky, inventive, yes. Charismatic lead performance, absolutely. But the quirkiness quickly became wearisome filler. There were some magic moments, but this was too little material stretched over too much time, even at 85 minutes. At a 20 minute run time it would have been a fantastic film.
I get the art of Brakhage's works. It's engaging, and unique. And I get making a lot of them. Monet painted a bazillion water lilies after all. But there comes a point, and for me it was watching this one, where they all start looking the damn same. I could have been rewatching any one of the other paint & scratch films of his I've seen and not realized it. They are immediately recognizable as Brakhage, and immediately forgettable as individual pieces.
Still, the sheer fact that he made 342 films, most of them just like this, means that he couldn't care less what I think of this one. Perhaps one day a Brakhage print will sell for $18M like Monet. What that buys me now as a viewer I have no idea.
There are three parts in the 9 minute version. The YouTube link with subtitles (mod-edit: dead link below removed) is just part 3. On the hunt for the rest subtitled...

This is less a filmmaker turning her camera on a garden than a gardener who happened to find a camera and rolled film while she walked around.Movie comment on Shallow Hal

That ending sucked. But I can't say it shouldn't have been there. The film is about what might happen if you tempt fear.Movie comment on Moonrise Kingdom

This is a student film, a remake of Bergman. Someone must have recruited 200 friends to vote it up on IMDB bc that's all the votes it has.Movie comment on Plastilinovaya vorona
