"Scenes from Under Childhood is an attempt to imagine fetal seeing and hearing. From this haze a child emerges in fuzzy halo superimposed on images of Brakhage himself... "
An average experimental short. Altought simple, the idea behind is somewhat fresh: Images of electronic circuits and a field of poppies collide and merge, creating a third new meaning. The result is momentarily interesting, if ultimately forgettable.
Very well written stuff. The fascinanting premise has innumerable ramification to the World today. A great first episode is followed by four epidose building up the story. Altough rather slow, they certainly pay off! Episodes 7 through 10 were mindblowing! A very intellectual series of psicological complexities that makes me hopeful of international television.
What a heartbreaking drama. Its sheer power left me shaking. And I wasn't the only one: there were a lot of teary eyes leaving the screening. After Meshi and this, Setsuko Hara has quickly become one of my favorite actresses of all time. The performances are excellent all around, Naruse brings an honesty in his actors that is simply brutal and devastating. And the music - ah, the music!
It's been a few hours since I saw it, and I still can't shake this question out of my mind:
How can such cruel individuals treat so horribly such kind, loving people?
Having just read the Paul Brickhill's book it was based on, I have new found love for this movie. It is surprisingly accurate, and on rewatch I found a lot of fascinating details I hadn't noticed before. Not only is The Great Escape a thrilling and insanely fun movie (with one of the best casts ever), it is also a tribute to the men in Stalag Luft III.
