I watched the remake first and didn't really know what to expect from this. Ringu is quite different in all aspects: a big example being Sadako/Samara's backstory.
It was decent - no scares, only tension - but I preferred the American version.
After just watching it I was initially tempted to say that it was overrated (hate throwing that word around). It took me a while to get into Taxi Driver, but by the end it did feel quite powerful.
I think that on a second viewing I would appreciate this much more. De Niro was great.
Pretty good. This is a movie that will be watchable for many years to come. As an adaptation of a great novel, it's not so good - but you can forget about that, I suppose.
Very tense, great atmosphere and some nice shots. The actress playing the wife didn't really seem to do the role well, and whilst Jack Nicholson can play crazy, the character seemed almost too crazy from the very start.
Actually decent some of the time. The best parts were when they weren't actually killing zombies.
Should have went for practical effects, regardless of their budget as the CGI looked horrid (yes, I know this is Syfy). Also, they should have avoided the wide city line shots, which looked bad, and kept it tighter and more personal (not just indoors, but smaller streets) - would have really benefited.
Would have liked this to have been the first Frankenstein adaptation that I saw. It was good, not particularly great. Book is much better - not always something that needs to be said but I feel that it does here.
Classic or not, I'm going to be blunt and honest: it wasn't very good.
Just watched it the night after I viewed The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, which I enjoyed more. Nosferatu just didn't captivate me, unfortunately. A big part of this view came from the horrendously bad soundtrack that accompanied the version that I watched (currently the one showing on Youtube).
Didn't sound creepy at all, more comical than it should have. Scenes were ruined by the blast of that weird thumpy music that outright sucked. Aside from the score, it didn't really hold my attention. I do like Werner Herzog's remake though.
Didn't think that I'd enjoy this one. Granted, it did take me until about half way through it (the 71 minute version, didn't want to watch the shorter one) to start getting into it.
So bizarre and surreal. I would recommend this to any horror enthusiast, and a lot of people hold it in (maybe too) high regards. It is good, just not... amazing or anything. Mainly, it opened the way for many to come and in that sense it is great.

Enjoyed it, but it got too silly (even for me) from the final third. They also revealed too much too early.Movie comment on Phantasm

Enjoyed it, but I was disappointed with the overly ambiguous ending, surely intended for "speculation". For that reason I could never rewatch this.Movie comment on The Toxic Avenger

Also, the closing sequence is stupid.

So venturing back to movies like this I've been finding that just because they're old, doesn't mean that they are classic. This movie stunk.Movie comment on Rush Hour 3

Decent, I guess. The setting killed it for me, and the script was definitely the weakest of the trilogy. A shame since the first two are excellent.Movie comment on Frankenstein

Very dull and poorly executed. The characters were particularly bland, and the casting terrible. That was probably the dealbreaker for me.I usually love movies like this, yet I was bored throughout. Nice closing shot though.
