People tend to say that "not a lot happens" in Mike Leigh's movies. I don't get that.
In "High Hopes" (actually, in many of his works), he managed to capture and put life in a nutshell. Lots of things happen, it just doesn't explode in our faces.
Subtlety is something wonderful and hard to attain, and this movie gives such a sweet and strong message about life. 130 minutes of explosions or overcomplicated plots are seldom capable of providing such impact.
that mother & daughter brawl between Wendy and Nicola alone would propel this movie to my favourites
YESSSSS.
Brilliant scene, brilliant movie.
If I were a movie writer/director, that'd be the kind of movie I'd like to make. Working class realness with a touch of rainbow and subtle melancholy.
This was a very good surprise for me. Such an original premise for a horror movie (originality's been lacking lately in the genre). Jill Larson and her daughter were amazing (even more so if compared to the flat performances given by the documentary crew).
Given a better screenwriter, this could've been flawless.
It is solid, though. And definitely so much better than most of the crap we've been getting from mainstream horror movies nowadays.
This movie blew me away. The acting was brilliant. I never gave Johnathan Rhys Meyers much thought, but after watching this one I must say I'm impressed. Christian Bale and Ewan McGregor were superb, as usual. An instant favorite!
The entire movie was a disappointment to me. I'm actually very surprised at how many of you seemed to have enjoyed this, makes me feel like 'uh, did I miss something or what?', because it was painful to watch.
When dealing with the incoherences and contraditions of all the religious doctrines, mockery is inevitable. Bill Maher's approach may sound arrogant, but let's use our common sense; who wouldn't want to make fun of a bunch of incongruous religious leaders? And more importantly, this documentary's whole point was questioning religions and its institutions, not proving whether there is a god or not.

Now this was a pointless movie. It surprised me to find out that Frances McDormand was involved in this. Very weak and unremarkable.Movie comment on Hereditary

Work of art. Flawless. The acting was impressive, art direction thorough... Chan-wook Park is a master mind. And I love me some asian sense of humor.Movie comment on High Hopes
