Arrabal mixes pieces of his other films w/ distorted, psychedelic editing in addition to home movie like shots for what were contemporary scenes. Locals speak to the camera- many of them are narrated over unfaithfully, keeping with the poetic voice including lines of Rimbaud scattered throughout the narration. Brilliant.
Mickey Rooney stars in this and speaks excellent (Revolution-style) French. Amazing, imaginative movie from surrealist playwright crazy ass genius, Arrabal.
Fantastic movie. I love this director and these actors- who are living out their lives in a mix of fiction/documentary. Everything feels natural. Real emotion is shown in the most refreshing way. Watching this movie, I couldn't help thinking about how much I cared about people of my life past and present. If you get the DVD- watch the Q and A in the special features to bring it all together
This is a wonderful film of intrigue; with an unusual layer of mystery, depth, and beauty. The actors act well, but on a different psychology than most films. Also a play within a play. Bravo Rivette
Like other completists out there, I'm glad I finally got to see this. Acting and timing not great, but there were some really good lines and shots and an eerie quality that help make this movie worth the hour.
I cannot believe how amazing this film is. It's a sequel, an art film, a western, and a Swedish film. I was totally entranced by the strangely rhythmic soundtrack and the flashbacks accompanying the plot. Vivid and poetic
I don't know when it happened, but Colin Farrell can act. Nicole Kidman figured it out by 1990, if not earlier, and shows no sign of slowing. I enjoyed this movie built on expectation. Drinking 3 or 4 Guinnesses during will only help.
"This is an outstanding movie." "I wish Howard Hughes would've stuck with directing for a little longer." "I'm surprised this movie doesn't get more recognition." "I predict it will be part of the Criterion Collection someday." "The flight scenes are beautiful." "The drama is well played." "Hughes was on to something." -these are quotes from me during the movie.
It's cool that James Franco did this. I love Hart Crane and I love James Franco's dedication to writing and directing. He knew a Hart Crane biography wasn't gonna break the box office but this film still has great value to people who care about the poet and those who want to see developments in experimental film making.
This is the best non-plot film I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Sorry filmheads, this is better than 8 1/2. How did he find a way to make this interesting and enriching at every moment? And how did he fit it in the budget? A Gore Vidal cameo to boot? Long live Fellini !

Great surrealist film. While not quite on the same level as El Topo, Holy Mountain, and Santa Sange, it belongs in the same box.Movie comment on Fear and Desire
