I don’t think the opening scene did a very good job getting us on the side with Ove. He tries to buy one bouquet using a voucher that can only be used when you buy two. When this is pointed out to him, he admits he only wants one, so why are you trying to use that voucher, then?
This doesn’t make him look like a jerk; that does have a point. It just makes him look dumb.
Saw a comment on here asking “has anyone had an experience like this?” In terms of meeting someone and instantly had chemistry with them, yes I think there are a lot of people out there that have done that.
I love how they have the whole world of Harry Potter lore to utilise here, but they build their story around entirely new things never mentioned in the books.
I naïvely went into this expecting The Office style comedy, I just assumed Stephen Merchant wrote this as well as stared in it. But no he’s just an actor this time.
I like the fact there is no jerk or rival character in this to either tell Merchant’s character he’s a bad father or trying stop him getting the toy. Merchant simply learns to get out of his own way and allow people into his life and do what he feels needs to be done to be a good father.
So Merchant’s arc is quite well done, other than that the movie is very by the numbers. Interesting to see Sophia Di Martino before she was in Loki though.
The only minor thing I don't like about this film is that it's very one-note and one tone throughout the whole thing. There is no emotional fallout just before the end or dramatic makeup at the end. They just meet, have instant chemistry, and that's the whole movie. It is a good film though
I do like the way they meet, the woman makes the first move by sitting next to him, but the man is the first one to speak, right away shows a mutual interest in each other.
I don't know what it is with M. Night Shyamalan films. They aren't "bad" they aren't even "so bad it's good". They are more like "so bad it's interesting".
I always see the potential for an interesting idea and I was really invested in the film for the first half-hour, but ultimately it feels flat.
Also, he needs to stick to writing and find someone else to direct, the way this film is acted and shot is very cringe!
As a movie on its own, it's fine. As the swan song to one of the original Avengers not to mention the first female Avenger and a movie that we've all wanted for about 7 years... it's a pretty big letdown.
It's just your standard action film, and don't get me wrong as that it's fine, I've just come the expect more from the MCU and this character.
The sister is great though, hope we see more of her.
