I can't believe this film is on a whoppin' 26 official lists. Not a bad movie, but way overhyped and overrated. Steve Buscemi in his most pointless role I've seen, the part could had been played by just about anyone, and every time John Goodman's character opened his mouth I just felt like punching him in the face. What a waste of so much talent here. Jeff Bridges was pretty great, though.
The jokes must've been funny in 1998, but they did absolutely nothing for me watching this now. The plot was predictable, and the musical bits just made me cringe, glad I was at least able to fast forward through those parts.
Absolutely brilliant. Fun, clever, even surprisingly emotional. One of the best movies I've seen in a bit, just blew any expectations I had for this right out of the water.
I'm guessing the vast majority of the money budgeted for making the film went into the frankly gorgeus setpieces and costumes, and hiring the cast.
Terrible, terrible script and dreadfully awful screenplay. Visual and sound effects were probably produced by somebody at their home (listen to Ming's lackyes pressing buttons on their devices making the sound of dialing on a telephone). The cast did a commendable job trying to make their best of the script, but in the end, even the cast and the super-- no, the ultra cheesy soundtrack provided by Queen can only save that much.
I really wanted to like this film, as I'm something of a sucker for horror and sci-fi b-films, but this was just utter trash, and not in a meritous way. The only kind of amazing thing about the film, though, is how Craven went from writing and directing this pile of steaming crap to delivering unto us A Nightmare on Elm Street just two years later.
How this film has a place on the TSZDT's list of 1000 greatest horror films official list is a mystery in its self -- even moreso seeing as how this flick barely has a notion of what I'd perceive as horror in it.
I sat down tonight, thinking about which movie I should watch. I was contemplating maybe a superhero film, but decided to go for sci-fi. I looked up "best sci-fi films of 2010s" to see if there are some I haven't seen, and from a list of some half-a-dozen films I chose to watch Arrival.
What a pick that was, my goodness. Strong and beautiful, and far more emotional than I could've expected. I can't remember the last time a science fiction film about meeting with extraterrestrials had me in tears by the end of the movie. How Arrival has a score of a mere 7.9 is beyond me, and reading some of the more cynical comments here on this page, as well as the many downvotes to comments praising the film just leave me dumbstruck. Many of those reactions are probably from people who were expecting an action movie with guns and explosions, but were let down because this was something much deeper.
Quite honestly, one of the worst action sci-fi films I've seen. Everything about it was terrible. I find Dolph Lundgren a somewhat sympathetic actor and usually enjoy his films to at least some degree, but I almost stopped watching this movie at one point altogether. The script was so full of gaping holes and the characters' actions so illogical that I pretty much didn't even care what happened at the end. And then even the end made me cringe a bit. The 3.1 rating is well deserved.
When the entire plot of a film relies solely on dialogue between characters, horrifically unbalanced audio levels can sometimes completely ruin the whole film, as happened with short.
I read some good reviews about this film, comparing it to the likes of Evil Dead and Nightmare on Elm Street, so I decided to see it. Big mistake.
Unimaginative, unoriginal, full of clichés, riding on female nudity, a very predictable plot, and it wasn't scary either. Some of the acting and special effects were great, but that's really the best thing I can say about this flick.
The comparisons to the genre classics mentioned earlier are ridiculous, this piece of turd can't hold a candle to them. How this film reached an overall rating of 6, 3 on IMDb is completely beyond me. 3/10 from me.
The plot was pretty good actually, but towards the end I felt it lost some of its consistency. The romancey stuff was very awkward and made me feel a bit queasy, but then I guess that (some) teenagers are into that sort of tackyness and they would enjoy that. Having not read the book (in fact, at the time of watching the movie I didn't even know it was based on a book), I was expecting to see a pretty solid sci-fi movie, and while it was a sci-fi movie, I would argue that the romantic parts played too big a role for a sci-fi movie fan to fully enjoy this movie.
Also, I felt that Melanie's voice inside Wanderer's head was at times very annoying and awkward, not because of what she was saying, but because I got the feeling Saoirse Ronan was just reading the text from the paper and not putting any soul into it.
This one was a dissappoitment for me. Looked forward to seeing it very much, but it failed to deliver. It wasn't all bad, the plot idea is great, and the acting was pretty good, but it just didn't quite cut it.

@PeacefulAnarchy, yes, and as such, outdated by 27 years of Spanish film-making. A list as irrellevant as this shouldn't be an official list.Toplist comment on Nickel Odeón's Best Spanish Films
