the normal heroine story arc develop together at the same time with the bad guy origin story
, but overall terribile and bland movie, and quite an ugly animation style, with very static, painted backgrounds that are a harsh contrast to the 3D characters. To get any joy from that wasted time my wife and I developed the theory that
the queen orchestrated the whole thing as a power play to ursurp the throne - she seems to be the one to set the protagonist (can't even remember her name) up for the meeting with the king, setting the crucial events at the start in motion, she could easily make the king feel threatened and tempted by the book of 'forbidden magic' (while openly seemingly advising against its use), she joins the rebellion super fast (and more likely made sure those kids would be together to start it), she is the one who brings the one working in the castle's bakery (the second rebellion leader) to the dungeon to study the book (which she seems to know well, using the oil that protects the two of its influence, while still reading the whole of it and learning everything inside), and she's the one to force the conclusion at that time, that the king can't be saved, but is lost to the book's influence forever (they only check the book itself, not any other from the magic library) and the queen embraces the idea of effectively having to kill the king immediately. During the boss fight, she's next to the girl from the bakery in the crowd and protects her, to save her witness/puppet, when the king (a day ago her beloved and admired husband, by the queens words) is imprisoned in the staff's crystal, she is quick to cruelly joke about it, taunt him and order him to be brought to the dungeon, to be out of sight, forgotten and imprisoned for eternity. Then, everyone instantly shouts "Long live the Queen!" and she embraces her role as new sole ruler happily.
Did that theory make watching the film worthwhile? No, but we had some brief fun mentality 'rewriting history' in order to make this mess make any sense to us.
The only good thing about this boring mess is how forgettable it is. Waste of a great cast and a pitty, since the first two Ant-Man films were very original with their heist-theme and humorous approach. In this film I just can't care about anyone or anything, and the 'indiginous people are just waiting for an American to arrive and tell them to start the revolution and rally behind them' vibe doesn't help.
Good actors/actresses, but terrible movie. Bad storytelling, weird play on racist stereotypes with non-Italian actors pretending to be Italian. And a very amoral ending, with the main character endorsing war crimes and knowingly profiting from genocide and stealing from the victims of fascism.
Wow. I expected this to be a nice movie. Instead I have to say it's one of the absolute worst I have ever seen. I really love the original, so it is baffling to me how you take such a great source material and turn it into something so offensively stupid. My one hope is that this will make more people watch La Famille Bélier.
Definately a testament to the talent of everyone involved - director, actors, etc. But the end product doesn't work for me. It's very clearly a book adaptation and in my eyes it doesn't make good use of motion picture as a medium; no strong visual storytelling; this just feels like going through a book with fewer details and less depth. That is also my overall impression of the film - it's very shallow. The story is good, but it's not being explored deeply enough, and on top of that it is all also rather monotonmous - there are no emotional ups and downs, no difference in tension, no changes in exitement. It's all a series of events that just happen, until we reach the end - which is probably supposed to be an ironic twist, but is actually the obvious conclusion throughout most of the movie. I haven't read the book, but I can imagine many parts of the story that can work out better in a novel. Overall a very mediocre and forgettable movie, just shy of being boring.
Doesn't work for me. I expected it to be entertaining and the cast was very promissing, but for me it turned out boring and unneccessary. The nostalgia is there alright, but instead of little nods to the original(s), the film is leaning heavily on it. It would be nice as little eastereggs that pop up throughout the movie, instead all these callbacks are constantly shoved in your face, saying "hey, do you remember this from the orignal movie? That was cool, huh?". Yes. It was. But this constant barrage of referrences doesn't add any substance to this movie. Also I think it's fine that the plot
is so similar to the original, with the story of the end of the world, Gozer, the Keymaster and Gatekeeper, but the way it's set up doesn't make any sense. The other Ghostbusters abbandoned and ignored Spengler for decades, even though he could have easily proven to them what was going on in the second temple, and that the end of the world, brought about in exactly the same way they prevented it once, was again an imminent possibility. We are supposed to just accept that they didn't believe that or didn't care, and yet they all show up at the most convenient time after they got a phone call from what is to them a random girl with surely a lot less information than what they got from Spengler
I thought Casino Royal was ok, not good, and I consinder all the other Craig Bond entries garbage. That said, I really liked this one, which was a very pleasent surprise after I found the trailer very boring and cliché.
Yet this film is great, both as a James Bond movie and as a film, generally. It not only manages to avoid all the pitfalls of the other Craig Bond films, but to incorporate the events and characters from them in good and meaningful ways, in my opinion "fixing" a lot of the bad choices made in these movies. The story is good, but nothing special for a "super spy has to save the world" movie (and you could complain about the usual things, like
that Bond is explosion and bullit proof, that grenades - designed to not give enough time to even kick them away - take as long time to explode as the plot wants, and why do they send only two people to the island to save humanity - personally, I didn't mind any of that, not even after the film, even if I find it rather noticable
), the villan is a bit bland, random and unmotivated (which they try to hide with pseudo-philosophical banter, as usual), but Malik's performance and the story's pace didn't make me mind at all.
The biggest strength of the film, in my eyes, is how much attention and time is devoted to character development, relationships and focusing on the human and emotional aspects of everything happening; it gives everything more weight and makes everything seem to make more sense than in the previous films (even when it's things that don't really make sense, at least under scrutiny), without getting in the way of the action at all, but rather managing to add so much more weight to it. This rather bold artistic choice ties in very nicely with how the movie is shot and edited - slower pace, beautiful wide shots, long sequences with few cuts. For me that makes it more enjoyable and more involving. Then, I think they found just the right tone for all the characters and relationships, without straying too far from the bad start the previous entries in this series gave them. The bond with Felix Leiter seems more genuine (and almost alluding more to the pre-Craig bond films), Q (and the portrail of movie hacking) feels more toned-down which works out well, also since he plays a more prominent role, the other 00-agent has a great dynamic with Bond, and also
Bond's relationship with Madeleine and Blofeld seems spot on and relatable to be; which I wouldn't say about Blofeld or Vesper in the other films
. All the callbacks and little in-jokes are fun and hit just the right tone, with good timing (my favorite would be
the unseen guard getting shot in the tunnel in the same perspective and way as in the famous opening sequence seen from the gun's barrel
.
And I love how the focus is shifted so strongly on Bond for much of the movie. It's not a Bond movie were we follow our beloved hero's adventures, but the story is much more about him - granted, the other Craig Bond films tried that, too, but here it actually works out. His thinking, his emotional state, his motivation, his interaction with others - everything seems more genuine and more human, and he's also portrait as more elegant, in my view, which fits the iconic character. My personal favorite interaction the character has is
when he says "Thank you, 007." after she tells him she'll come with him to the island - which is maybe obvious, since it's her mission and the world is at stake, but
I really love that little moment and how it portrays Bond's growth: humble, respectful, able to accept help, well-mannered, strong - a stark contrast to the previous films, and a good decision to mature the character closer to it's classic iconic values.
Finally I really liked the action. This movie's style for the action sequences (car action, shooting, close quarter combat) really hits my taste, both regardind what's happening and how it is shown.
What I also like is
that the bio/nano weapon is called Heracles. In Greek mythology Heracles was once poisoned which caused him to kill his wife and daughter. And if I remember correctly he also killed a lot of innocent people, either still because of the poison or because he went mad after seeing what he had done, I'm not sure. This has a nice double meaning for No Time to Die: Bond being poisoned so that he would kill Madeleine and Mathilde and Project Heracles, the weapon that was supposed to be perfect and without collateral damage, like the great and just hero Heracles, is poisoned and changed into a terrible force killing innocents instead of (supposedly) justified targets
"Why?" and "What?" were the questions on my mind while watching the movie. Hard to follow the action and harder to care about it. I liked the first movie and I like the actors and characters, but this is one terrible mess that makes no sense and is impossible to enjoy. Do yourself a favor and skip this garbage, even if you liked the first movie.
More watchable than I expected, but certainly not really a good movie. The premise and the cast are great, and it's even fairly original, but all the good parts fail to make a good whole.
Steve Martin is great, as one might hope. But the film is terrible. There's one cute kid, the other young ones are demons trying to destroy their parent's lives and happiness and the three older ones are chosing not to be of any help but just complain and demand more liberty. Just because their parents needed two weeks to settle their new careers that would have hugely benefitted the entire family. Can't have that, let's sabotage mom and dad.
Screwball comedies just aren't for me. I just find the characters so despicable and unlikeable and I'm getting more and more furious as the terrible plot unfolds as I wait for justice to befall our hateful, arrogant protagonists. But of course, that never comes to pass and they instead are awarded for being disgusting human beings. Dancing is nice, but not enough to make the rest acceptable.
A well done sequel. If you didn't like the first movie, this won't be for you either, obviously.
I think both films are really fun, and this one manages to have a similar vibe and be true to the original while successfully venturing out on a new story line. Once again, it's heavily focused on the protagonist, which is a good thing, and probably the main reason why people enjoy these films.
And Elle is just like in the first film - delightful, smart, kind, brave, positive attitude, unshakably confident, always herself, seeing the best in others, incorruptable morals, always helping everyone around her, and having fun along the way. What's not to like about that?
It's a fairly entertaining watch, but I'm rather underwhelmed.
The subject matter is great and would make for a good movie, but in my opinion, this is not that movie.
Even taking aside the (in this case tolarable) Indian patriotism, this is not a well written story. Most annoying for me are the lack of character development and a certain lack of obstacles.
In the setup the protagonist starts out as an asshole who doesn't care about others - good start. But as soon as the story kicks in a couple minutes later, he instantly transforms into the altruistic hero he remains for the rest of the film. And there are adverse events in the story, but the characters don't really resolve them, rather they are merely present as story plays out by itself.
It's a really interesting subject matter, but it seems as if the characters are themselves watching a weak adaptation of Hotel Rwanda take place around them.
I found the first one to be very entertaining.
This is just so tedious. They threw the old characters back together, but now their relations and actions don't make sense, the story doesn't develop, instead we have to suffer through a bland series of random events, interspersed with painfully bad expositional flashbacks and then even a voice over narration to try and tell us something the movie can't relate through actions or dialog.
And of course it ignores a lot of established rules from the Harry Potter universe, like
not being able to apparate to Hogwarts or a random auror using an avada kedavra curse without saying the spell, something even Voldemort could not do
.
It's obvious this five film series is a giant cash grab, but if it were entertaining or made any sense within the Harry Potter world, I wouldn't mind. This is just too lackluster and uninspired.
Also, of all the films randomly taking place in Paris for no good reason just because American audiences have a romantic fairytale image of the city, this is the worst offender.
A good zombie movie on its own and a great zombie movie considering it came out in 2016, after and amidst so many terrible ones. It's not groundbreaking, but it is fresh and entertaining and it has great zombies, a good emotional subplot and a nice moral theme throughout.
I love Rowan Atkinson, still this film is just lazy, cheap, unoriginal and mostly unfunny.
If you know the other Johnny English movies, you know what to expect. It's not all bad, just unambitious and basically the same old stuff over and over again.
A terribly bland and boring film. All the actors deliver a solid performance, and especially Anne Hathaway's character is adorable, but that's the only good thing to be said about the movie.
The story makes little sense and while obvious plotholes are glossed over or brushed aside with techno-magic it focuses instead on stupid, unrealistic details. So far that would be ok for a film in the Ocean's series, but the others are at least somewhat interesting and fun. This one is just pointless.
