I know I may sound like the Fun Police, but my god, is this impossible to watch with modern eyes. It's pretty rare that I switch off a film halfway, especially an old one. But I found this a real struggle to watch again (last seen two or three decades ago). Poor Claudette constantly denigrating herself, arrogant and very creepy Joe, Hattie made to look a right idiot, kindness equalling 'communism', a cringey portrayal of a girl who doesn't speak and is afraid of people and so much offensive dialogue. As a lifelong old film lover, I can often overlook this sort of thing, but I just found this one infuriating and couldn't sit all the way through. A pity.
Watched today for probably the 100th time. I love how I always notice something new. It has cheered me up on a cold morning, fuelled by insomnia and being home sick (for real).
What a bewildering film. They make us want to go away thinking Roald Dahl was simply a depressed but affable fellow, rather than a loathsome bigot. And that they were a couple who lived happily ever after. (Not to mention a Scottish Paul Newman! And I love Keely Hawes, but she was not right for this role). Anyway, I approve of the inclusion of Edith Head, even though she was given no introduction so the average viewer probably has no clue that she is a total icon.
