Despite what the comments say this is a perfectly fine standard sports film. Its plot is basically a bad news bears or mighty ducks story but is also making a statement against racism, sexism, and religious bigotry all of which seem pretty standard things we should all be against.
The one thing this film has convinced me of though is that field hockey is a really weird looking sport and having all your athletes hunched over while they play looks weird and makes it really hard to look bad ass.
While this movie is head and shoulders above Old this still felt pretty contrived and overly ponderous. I think the most interesting part of the movie would have been the next 6 months of these characters lives.
Jason Statham was miscast...couldn't pull off darker Michael Mann type character...kinda dragged the movie down. Not sure who would've been better maybe a Karl Urban or Thomas Jane?
This movie is bizarre to watch today. While I can't deny the script is fun and adventurous like an Indiana Jones script it's a film that nearly checks all the racist boxes for modern audiences. Blackface...check. Colonial masters putting down native rebels...check.
Nobel savage that sacrifices self for exploiter...title character check.
But probably the craziest element is the fact that the villain is an unmistakable personification of Gandhi, who is shown not as a leader of independence but as a villainous murderous cult leader attempting to drive the British from India to build his own monstrous empire...i've never really seen anything like it.
I'm assuming that this list isn't ranked. Would you consider making that list chronological? It might give some context for people looking to see how good films influence each other.
I'm still constructing the list...i've only made it to the mid 70s of the 100. And when I started it wasn't clear when they were making it if they were giving the awards to every video mentioned or just the first or just the most prominent. I then decided about halfway through that I was just going to list each one if I could find them on the imdb page. But yeah at the top I have to go back and redo the first ones again adding them all. I missed with the Eminem ones also.
But in short it's still a work in progress and planning to get them all in there. Although some I can't find at all because I don't think they are listed in imdb.
I found some articles related to this film festival going back to 1976. The film festival claims its in its 43rd year and it appears to have given out awards for best film every year. https://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/32/138/114381/Folk/Photo-Heritage/Meet-Cairo-International-Film-Festival%E2%80%99s-first-edi.aspx. This article claims that The Clowns an Italian Film won in 1976.
This is not a good film. I've seen nearly every David Lean and this is by far his worst. It's a stuffy upper-crusty British affair with a technology film plot very similar to The Right Stuff, First Man, or Ford V. Ferrari with a team attempting to break the sound barrier and damning everything in their lives, including family and safety, to reach their goal.
The whole thing amounts to very little, and the plot turns in the last 10 minutes to wrap up a family melodrama with a studio ending...lacking in all subtly and realism.
The most shocking thing to me is that the film won the BAFTA for best film from any source in 1952. Not best British Film which is another award they gave out that year...but from any source...beating the following films (which were nominated):
African Queen
Cry, The Beloved Country
Death of a Salesman
Limelight
The Young and the Damned
Singing in the Rain
A Streetcar Named Desire
wow...talk about a swing and a big big miss...bad form BAFTA...bad form.
