If this film was made in the 1930's it would have made the nazis list of degenerate art and unlike most art on that list it would have actualy deserved the title. That said it's not a bad film per se. It's actualy pretty well made and the acting is decent. Just the contents are absurdly gross and obscene.
I don't say they are wrong per se i say their definition is too broad. To define noir isn't easy at it is and when you add every movie with a dark mood that was made between 1930 and 1960 it gets extremely squishy. You have to keep in mind film noir is not a genre it's a style therefore it's perfectly reasonable to make the distinction between American and European films that share a similar theme and mood.
It's my personal opinion and i'm not alone with it. The guys over at TSPDT are film experts too and exactly how many foreign films are on their quintessential noir list? 2 out of 250.
I suggest you watch a couple more noirs and then make up your own mind instead of putting blindly all your trust in your lecturers judgement.
And nobody is questioning the European influence on noir. But that is written on a different page.

There are only very few exceptions like Rififi for example which was done by an American director who was expelled from Hollywood.
Noir like or noir inspired would be a more fitting description for the films that you watch in your course.

I agree. No way is this the best British film. It's a mess. The only good thing about it is the beautiful cinematography (which is often spoilt by horrible editing and bad sound design).
I found the movie rather hilarious then disturbing. Every hardcore porn film is more graphic. They don't really show much except some nude people and fake feces.
Sure the stories they tell are revolting but you have to be a real wuss if you can't laugh them off.

The thing is we are all anonymous here. This website is not the olympic games. I don't care if you have seen 2000 or 200 movies. Personaly i use this website for myself. It's a very good way to get some structure into watching movies. The more movies i can check here the better.
I don't get what problem some people have with adding all movies. You can still use only the top lists that you consider worthy, compare them with other user and ignore the rest.
If showing off your e-penis (aka the that number next to your user name) is all that counts for you and you see that treatened by people who watch a lot of crap then you will not be missed.
Being able to check all movies will be great once custom lists are there. We can create lists of filmographies for directors or actors etc. I can't wait for that.

To be fair each series of Black Adder only has 6 shows and has its own enclosed theme. I would say it's a grey zone.Stuff like Heimat or Berlin Alexanderplatz is much more monumental but nobody complains about them.
