The atmosphere, colours, music... all splendidly produced. However, for the sake of these elements, the director seems to have disregarded many essential elements in the book (or, in the real story for that matter).
The film can barely convey to the spectators the agony Michael Kohlhaas suffers, or how he could raise a small-scale army, how viciously he had been treated by the authorities, how he had to endure countless treasons and backstabbings, how royal/family ties and self interests prevail above all else (especially justice: justice is but a mere word), etc. The director and screenwriter also ignored the immensenly important Martin Luther's influence, sympathy, philosophy on Kohlhaas' case. Even in the film cast, he is referred as "the theologist".
Poor, very poor screenwriting, very poor character development - even description -, but close-to-perfect directorship of photography!
Oh Mein Gott! This "thing" here, simply put, is a giant sputum thrown at the face of cinema.
There should be a button standing for "Deserves 6-feet under: never to see the sunlight ever again!"
I don't know why I waited this long to see Escape from Alcatraz; made me downvote The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile after seeing how much they've been "influnced" by this film. If only they had put more emphasis on Frank's relationship with Wolf and English, as well as on betterment of the dialogues, this film could have taken its seat amongst the bests as it deserves...
One thing, at iCM, missing dearly is the absence of Kang-ho Song filmography. Would anyone be so kind to create one? (I would, but apparently I can only create one list with a free account.)
aahh... shallowness. three hours is a long time to say/show/point out what you want to put forward. (some) credits should be given to the film for the sake of originality—second that—; nonetheless, magnolia cannot snap out of shallowness.
well, today's kids are largely lucky. that's for sure. good film for the younglings; rather cliche-driven, poor in script and cheesy dialogues for the bit older (>20 of age).

One more and once again a grand acting oozing sincerity by Kang-ho Song. I envy those who are about to discover him – if not the Korean cinema.Movie comment on How to Train Your Dragon
