An incredible commentary of our time, ambiguously comparing terrorist ideology with the god-like position of pop stars. Amazingly acted all over, and the final show... One of the best musical finales ever made. Ironic and touching at the same time.
Surely, this piece of nonsense will finally put an end to the series. It has declined ever since the second installment, but with Ghost Dimension, the PA series has reached the bottom floor, where there is nothing to be curious about anymore.
Perhaps the biggest mistake from the film makers here is that they try to implement visual horror effects into a series that was born because of its ability to be frightening without being expensive. Cheap monsters are sad creatures for a horror fan.
Slumlord is a pleasant surprise that should appeal to a broader audience outside the hardcore genre fans. The concept is thought provoking and highly relevant, and the execution is promising for these young filmmakers.
Slumlord builds its tension the way good, realistic horror movies do; slowly, and with the development of intriguing relations between the characters.
What I really like about it is that it never goes overboard with trying to be a scary movie. It stays natural, realistic and creepy, even if you knew what was coming right from the beginning.
Shyamalan returns to the core elements that put his name in the history books 16 years ago. He does an impressive job combining horror and mystery with comedy and melodrama. Once again a blue eyed boy is the star of the show, and that is only one of several significant Shyamalan signatures in the film. You will not be bored.
Rogue Nation continues to build on the elements of comedy introduced in the previous installment of the series. At the same time it takes us back to the absolutely breathtaking action sequences of the first two films, and goes even further, taking advantage of 2015 technology. For a Mission Impossible nostalgic like myself, Rogue Nation is as pleasurable as guilty pleasures come. The dialogue is cheesy, but perfectly conscious about it. The irony is sharp. Tom Cruise is in shape. The plot is crazy. Rogue Nation is fun, fun, fun. And oh my, the motorbike scene... the motorbike scene...
It's funny in that vulgar, Rogen way. Some will be disappointed - this is your friday night guilty pleasure. It is a quite forgettable affair, and it simply cannot be placed in the rows of powerful political satires such as Dr. Strangelove or The Great Dictator. I must add that it is not completely without a spark ("Kim must die. Because that's the american way.").
Don't make the same mistake I did; don't watch this movie. The Hunger games meets Lost meets Lord of the Flies. Sounds fun, right? Guess again. This is the type of movie where you can predict most of the lines before they are said, call the jumps before they happen and know the end before mid way. And there is always a chance the extremely unbelievable dialogue and empty character display will have you heading for the exit sign long before that. This movie takes its audience for idiots. In fact, there is a chance you will become an idiot if you watch the whole thing. It's the type of movie that kills brain cells.
I suspected it while watching "Play" a few years ago, but now I am sure: Ruben Östlund is a genious!
I find this movie unique. I can't remember having seen something so disturbingly awkward before. It's dead serious and hilarious at the same time. At least that's how I interpreted it.
Unlike Chikamaharry, who commented earlier, I didn't find it emotional until the ending scenes. Everything before that was, the way I see it, more like sterile images of emotional events. There are two reasons why I felt this way. One: there was never a scene in which all characters were emotionally effected by what was happening. There was always one or more characters who did not emphasize with the emotional character. Two: the director makes sure that the audience is physically distanced from the most emotional scenes. For example, the camera backs away a lot when showing the man having an emotional breakdown.
Östlund again proves himself as an extraordinary and intelligent observer of human relations. "Play" was amazing in how it described the relationships between young criminals on a detailed, psychological level. This movie does the same, only the focus is now on a european middle class family.
It's never a good thing when you get the feeling that a film is really a parody of the story it's telling. I thought they would be able to avoid the cheesiest moments, simply because they were so obvious. They didn't.
No actor in the world could have saved this one. It's a mess from the first scene. It takes place in some far from credible universe of mediocre at best graphic effects, where doves are thrown at me in 3d, accompanied by loud, futile music. I'm trapped in some corner of the bible that seems severely uninspired on screen. In fact, it's uninspired to the degrees that it had to go shoplifting from far more effective special effect flicks of the 2000's (I swear I saw a glimpse of Gandalf in there).
The half interesting existential questions that Aronofsky tries to raise don't even board the ark. In stead they drown in the flood, so that all there's left is the mad struggles of Noah - a man who changes his standing with a remarkable frequency, considered his seemingly strong convictions.
Scorsese is a master of epic rise and fall stories. This is classic Scorsese, perhaps with a more dominating element of comedy compared to what we've seen from him before.
The Wolf seems to be divided into three genres, and if you like, three acts. First there's the comedy, then there's the crime, then comes the drama. All acts are wildly entertaining. DiCaprio pulls off the performance expected from him, although McConaughey is the one that really shines in the all too few scenes we get to see him.
I can't help but comparing parts of this film to Glengarry Glen Ross. And those parts fall short. The script may be part of the reason, but DiCaprio's speeches don't stick in the same way that Pacino's did. DiCaprio's character does however deliver some memorable quotes, not unlike Gordon Gekko.
The Wolf of Wall Street is a hybrid of Wall Street, Glengarry and Casino. At the same time it manages to stand on it's own.
At times the director manages to tell a lot using a simple and symbolic footage. At those times, the film is at it best. On the other hand it falls through, due to uninspired acting and unlikeable characters, whom we never get to know or care for. 3/6
An abduction "thriller" that is the complete opposite of Taken. There's no Liam Neeson. There are no resources - with the film makers nor the parents. The realism is a very strong element in this film. It just feels so authentic, because it is. This is a film that really creeps up on you in the hours after you've watched it. 5/6
The film begins with a nice, humorous tone. And it finds it's way back to that tone in the end. But in between, nothing interesting happens. Therefore, most of the time, this feels like a half hearted road movie.
Out of the three main characters, we only get to know one of them. It's probably just as well - I didn't really feel like getting acquainted with the others. What's more: there are no interesting side characters, which is crucial to a road movie. It doesn't help that the overall acting is very poor.
3/6
This is powerful film making, using the instruments that a documentary possesses. In one moment, there's a humorous tone. In the next, we're thrown in to some of the most dangerous places in Mexico. We take part in the police' incomprehensible struggle to stop the drug business, and we feel the pain of the victims' relatives.
Pointing at US ignorance to the horrible situation in Juarez, this is a very important film that deserves to be seen.
Now this is perfection of the thriller genre. Hitchcock would be taking his hat of. So far it looks like this film is terribly underrated. Maybe it will gain recognition with time - I believe it's the best thriller since Fincher's Se7en.
Most of the script is well thought through, which makes it very suspenseful. Reminded me of Zodiac, with another amazing effort by Gyllenhaal. In fact, the acting is solid from the entire cast. The crime dimension of this thriller is slightly predictable, and it has some lose ends. It doesn't quite follow through with the themes we are introduced to in the opening scenes. But hey, Prisoners does make the audience it's prisoners. 5/6
Watchable only because of DiCaprio's performance. The plot holes are huge, and the director seems to have been taking more drugs than the main character. What's he doing? 3/6
Casino is not quite able to keep the necessary amount of suspense throughout it's long running time. Could have gained from less use of voice over and better priorities when it comes to what elements of the plot are actually interesting. I don't feel like watching it again, but it certainly made me want to watch Goodfellas again.
A huge disappointment. I really have no idea how critics can embrace this film. Yes, Wan is a talented director, but what a waste of talent this is. Conjuring offers one or two good jumps, what good are they when the rest of the film has already put you in the "just another unintentionally funny horror movie"-mood?
Stylish and disturbing. Winding Refn sets the tone from the first shot and keeps the pace throughout the film. A strong directorial performance. Owes a lot to Tarantino and similar films such as Oldboy.
It's not all about style though, it takes on how we view violence, and how the relationship between parents and children affects our view on it.
The film kept me absorbed in it's dark red universe. One of my best film experiences this year.
Nicely designed, stylishly directed and very well played. Unfortunately it's far too long for it's material. The filmmakers seem to be struggling to decide whether they are making a serious mob film or a ridiculous shoot-em-up. Additionally, they get started on too many relations. Inevitably, some of them had too fail in engaging the audience. The love story starring Gosling and Stone is proof of this.
Beautiful images makes it interesting for about half an hour. Cave of Forgotten Dreams would have been a compelling and informative documentary if it lasted 45 minutes tops. In the end, I actually find myself agreeing with the "cave of boring ass shit" comment.
