One day they'll realize there are other actors who could play psychos apart from Leto. The plot is okay but it was stretched out a bit too long without any real hangers or exciting bits. It seemed as if they tried to give it a True Detective vibe but it didn't work out. A mediocre movie with no space for the supporting cast. Given the length of the whole thing that's really disappointing.
I found it hilarious and charming at times, but also cruel in a way it portrays stagnant patriarchal society, where modern women are struggling for air. And it might seem absurd - because of how melange and relaxed it actually is, and how hot the weather is and nobody gives a shit about anything, I mean just look at that scenery - but that's the gist of it, that amidst something so nice and unsuspicious sinister things are happening, yet they seem so common, so usual, so 'normal' that they almost merge with the sunny colourful picture and you almost miss them. Almost.
This is a really good, well made horror. Ambiguity of the events and their cause is a strong point. And the wolves scene, I thought, is really terrifying.
I very well made, decent film, unexpected twist but a bit of a blunt finale which seemed somewhat disappointing. I guess I just didn't expect it to be that and it didn't sit well with me. The whole concept of digging is really interesting.
I didn't expect it to be like this and I didn't expect it to be weird and cute and weird. What an odd film, and I am so glad I watched it! Isabél Zuaa is fantastic
I can see why it has such a low rating, unjustly so. This film doesn't break any boundaries, doesn't really show anything new or exciting. I wouldn't even call it dramatic even though the events are, in a way. But I found it so engaging and charming, so kind. I think it's a wonderful story about grieving, not understanding death, not understanding grief, about acceptance of reality vs religious lore and about coming to terms with life and nature's laws.
It's very calm and quiet, a bit awkward and odd... just like the real life is. Very lifelike. Great film, definitely worth a watch.
I have mixed feelings about it, I can't say I hated it because there were just too many parallels/allegories to be drawn and that was really interesting. However, I can't say I loved it either. One thing for sure: this film will stay with me for a long time and I probably will be looking back at it as the time goes by. In the end I might decide I liked it.
As for the biblical allegories people keep talking about... It did occur to me as the story progressed to the birth of the child scene. However, it seemed to me to be more of a man/woman relationship allegory. Where the man is the creator, the wise one, the strong one, the one to whom others come and his wife is the house in which he lives in. How she cherishes every little thing she'd build inside, how she hates others intruding on her "heaven" and taking away her husband's attention and sparkling interest where she couldn't... The whole process of the heart turning into a crystal and a cycle of the house burning down and coming to life again with each new wife - it's the essence of the romance. Woman tends to sacrifice herself for the love she has for the man and she dies/withers/burns away when the love is gone, while the man turns to find another woman and feed on her love instead...So it's like the woman has to go through death and regeneration after a breakup, while the man continues to carry on collecting hearts and turning them into his most prized possessions. I thought this film was about ownership and ways in which people can hurt each other. All those crazy people, wars and stuff - it all to me was a representation of what she felt as she was losing his love. I guess this is far stretched and the biblical theme fits better.
Beautiful and atmospheric. I would even say they didn't need to show
the actual witch
in order to support the story and the suspense. Plot wise it's a little weak and kept losing me from time to time.
I think Eggers still has a lot to learn and has room to grow as a director and a writer, but all in all he's on the right path to great success.
Salma Hayek made the whole movie. Without her it would have been unbearable to watch, haha. It was a surprise to see Richard E Grant in an episodic role of a cocaine crazed businessman, wish they'd pursued that part of the story further or maybe added more guest appearances.
Poor Oldman, people cast him solely for the name nowadays. He barely had any scenes.
Jackson is great but brings nothing new to the table.
Reynolds is just meh as usual.
Not worth going to the cinema in my opinion, best rented online or smth.
wow that was intense. definitely worth a watch. John Snow, judging from his episode in this film, still doesn't know anything hah.
however, violence towards children in this one was really over the top. it was really hard to cope with it, so if you are not strong enough in that regard - you really shouldn't watch this.
I am an oldfag fan of the original manga and anime and _I_didn't_ask_for_this_. Who did? Who asked for this? Who needed this remake??? WHY???
I wouldn't have had any problem with this movie if they didn't position it as a_remake_. Hollywood is great at stealing fine ideas and scenarios, there never was any shame in doing so before, why not do the same now? Just call it differently, give them all different "white" names... But you know what? That way it would have been Lucy 2 or Under the Skin 3.4, because without the original plot and story line being put into it, it would have been yet another cool 3D blockbuster with a genius actress Scarlett Johansson, who plays all the cool kick-ass women nowadays, because, obviously, there are no other actresses with tits and ability to throw their legs and arms around. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't care less about her as an actress, I just experience deja vu every time I see a new trailer with her, because they_all_look_the_same. Only her hair changes. Personality, character - never really does.
Anyway, yeah, the picture is pretty, very polished, as someone said earlier "digestible" - well, a white blockbuster for a white audience, lol. Again, change the title and the names of the characters and you'll have just another sci-fi cyborg/female led action movie, which we see twice a year now. Shallow, pretty, digestible. Fast food for eyes.
p.s.: okay I will add one positive thing. Costume design is great. I'm not talking about Major, but other supporting actors wear some really fine clothes. So thanks to Kurt and Bart, who always deliver top-notch stuff.
Too much 3D - to redraw the cartoon would have been much easier and cheaper, so what was the point of making a movie then? Nothing that they "modeled" was any better or more innovative than the French version with Vincent Cassel - La belle et la bête (2014). I'd rather watch same actors on stage in actual decorations, in an ordinary musical version of this.
Shame that Dan Steven's face was covered by 3D facade, hence make-up would have been cheaper and more realistic. Going back to my previous point.
The script was terrible, I don't know how they managed to make dialogues even shorter and shallower than in the original cartoon, which had a much shorter run time. I mean I know it's for kids, but kids don't get silent staring-contest scenes, they need words. Which is, probably, why Watson seems so puppet like in most of her scenes - I mean she barely has lines at all, all she does is smiling and staring into the air, where something 3D hovers.
I know 3D effects are cool, epic and awe-striking and all that shit, but ironically they kill the reality of what's happening. And although Disney followed the original cartoon scene by scene, they absolutely lost the magic of the "magic" and of the story behind all this glittery shiny overly complicated objects.
Luke Evans is a great Gaston and sings very well, thank you very much.
All in all, they had a great cast, not the worst singing, horrible french accent courtesy of Mr McGregor, they had many great ambitions but unfortunately didn't fulfill like 70% of them. But they made a lot of money and I am very happy for them.
Hands down one of the best military films I've seen. It is funny but also very deep and sad. Most importantly, it's about people, real people and their hearts. Jiang Wen is a brilliant writer, director and actor. His works deserve more recognition and this film should be in all the lists and "movie bibles".
A huge shame and disappointment, given how good the original film actually is. The golden rule is: don't make bloody sequels. Well some people just never learn. Even more so it was sad to see such brilliant actors as Thornton and Bates mixed up in this mess.
