expected more in every way. Still watchable with a nice central performance, but overall underwhelmed.

worth a watch for the performances. Brad Renfro, Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones are all great.

Although I think a similar, superior film is Running On Empty.

delightful performances, especially from Gish and Price. beautiful, slow film, reminiscent of Ford & Ozu.

great premise but really lacks tension. doesn't 'capitalise' on its potential

little slow to start, never really reaches great heights but is enjoyably carried by a multi-faceted Sellers performance with several good humoured threads running through it.

love the naturalism of the performances and the handheld zoomy photography style. the shot composition was delightful and so much up close and personal.
feels like an atmospheric and intimate slice of life, with momentum in its plot and a sense of mystery in its direction.

visually very well composed, atmospheric, intriguing.

for me, it failed to build on its grand potential. fizzled out.

a noble piece

packs a punch, with some great sequences and use of music. but it's not all wonderful, the script often becomes a bit generic and forces false emotion on the actors. but overall definitely deserves a 7/10 for its energy, thoughtfulness, resonance and intent.
Rob Brydon in a minor role is hilarious :)

Great premise, performances and ideas woven into it. Unfortunately I felt the second hour really failed to build on the first. It got a little sidetracked and the characters we had got to know disappeared without any kind of pay-off. I still enjoyed it and found it powerful, but I don't think it fully realised its potential. I absolutely love Maborosi, Kore-eda's film prior to this one.
