It's like other Kirk Douglas vanity projects, only this time, overwrought, long, and self-righteous. He didn't get the lead in Ben-Hur, so he pouted, and bought the rights to bring Spartacus to life. Derivative and bloated, the only saving grace is the great supporting cast (Olivier, Peter Ustinov, and Charles Laughton).

The car chase is as great as advertised, but this is a pretty flawed film. The scene with Bullit's girlfriend opening up about how his job is changing him is so poorly conceived.

Gozu may be the most surrealistic film in Miike's canon. If you know anything Miike, that's saying a lot.

Christian Bale is such an overrated actor, but this is easily his best work -- so nuanced and controlled. I have to admit, I was wrong about this film when I first saw it. After seeing it again at the marvelous Castro Theater in San Francisco, I realized how fully realized and highly intelligent it was. Bravo, Mary Harron!

Couldn't agree more. Also, the never-ending onslaught of references got a little old.

An uneven film for sure, but Michelle Williams is masterful.

By all accounts, this is an assembly line romantic comedy, but any elevation of the material is due to Pressburger's tight script and Powell's inventive directing.

This film really shows Miike's versatility.

Anton Walbrook is unquestionably one of the greatest actors of all time. He is just sublime in this film.

Absolutely brilliant.

@seithscott Definitely. Some of Aronofsky's compositions for Black Swan were directly lifted from this film. They're virtually identical in terms of theme (the exploration of the value of art) and plot, although Swan is darker and campier. Some say Swan owes a debt to The Red Shoes, I say it owes it's entire existence to this Archers masterpiece.

Surreal, odd, but yet somehow, very much Miike.

Have you guys heard the remake? Apparently it's been in the works for years, but it's stuck in development hell.

Definitely tongue-in-cheek, but the filmmakers were in total control of the material, which makes it a quality cult horror film.

I know it's blasphemy to say this, but I think Grand Illusion's a little overrated. I'd take it over lots of other films, but I'm not sure if it's quite as deserving of all the praise it gets.

Surprisingly good, if you're able to to recognized that it's a B-horror film. The ending is outstanding.
