From the title I was expecting something a little more analytical, but it's mostly John Wayne saying John Ford is great over and over, with a little Jimmy Stewart also saying Ford is great. Not much of a documentary on the real.
"What a heavy burden God has laid on men! I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. What is twisted cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted."
Ecclesiastes 1:13-15
I forgot where but I saw someone post this quote in a discussion about Viridiana and I've been thinking about it ever since
By far the most shamelessly self-indulgent movie I've ever seen. That doesn't make it bad. It's beautifully shot and has some fun moments, but three hours is an awfully long time to watch rich people be capricious.
AtomicSquid is absolutely right. A shameless, cringeworthy amount of exposition. The philosophical questions everyone is talking about aren't raised by the story, they are literally asked in the dialogue. Fantastic visuals but really weak writing.
If you don't like silly action movies then don't see it. You knew what you were getting yourselves into. I do like silly action movies and I enjoyed it.
This is a terrible movie, but it's kind of cute because you can see how much effort and enthusiasm went into it. It's like watching a little kid who's bad at sports. Sure they fail, but they try SO HARD. Some scenes were pretty funny, though not intentionally. It was bad but I don't feel like I wasted my time watching it.
The acting, directing, and cinematography are wonderful, yes. But the grandiose style seems almost ironic in contrast with lowbrow LaMotta. He's mean-spirited, childish, and quite frankly, an idiot. His tantrums are as predictable as they are pointless. Am I missing something? As a subject he seems way too easy for Scorsese's or De Niro's skills.
