From some comments on the IMDB lists I think people don't realize that these are not critics lists but based on user ratings on IMDB.
So if your favorite movie is not included it just means that IMDB users did not give it a high rating. And really there is nothing you can do about other people's opinions.
I am actually glad they included Sunrise. Technically speaking it is not a Best Picture winner but you can argue that at the first awards Sunrise & Wings somewhat shared Best Picture since they won different best picture categories: Best production VS Unique & Artistic production.
I don't think the award Sunrise won was deemed inferior it just didn't exist after the first ceremony. It's also not like Sunrise & Wings were nominated in the same category and Sunrise was giving this inferior award. The two awards had completely different films nominated and Sunrise & Wings each won in their respected category.
Perhaps the 2010 list will actually be relevant when a decade has actually passed. For now we can see how many bad movies have come out in 2010. It probably doesn't take a lot for a film to make the top 50 at this point.
I am really surprised L'avventura is not on this list. Granted I am not an expert on Italian film but it is on pretty much every other important film list it seems.
