Pretty faithful adaptation of the comments, which made it pretty fun to watch and see the readers' interpretations of the letters.

Thanks for catching that! I'm not sure how I missed that one the first time around... Maybe the two versions of Fanny and Alexander threw me off?

This movie has been acquired by MUBI.com for North America, so I guess it'll become available there at some point.

Awesome! Thank you! I've added them to the list (out of order, but I can't be bothered to figure out where they're supposed to go).

It is always sad when founders leave. Erik and Piet have put in a lot of work into this site over the years and have managed to build a beautiful and useful place for film fans to check movies.

While I think we'd all love to see you continue, I don't think there's any point to it if the desire is no longer there.

Fortunately, Marijn is willing to continue the work and I guess it's time to see if this baby is now ready to move on with only one parent. Hopefully, people will have some patience as it's now a one-man operation.

To Erik and Piet: So Long and Thanks for All the Fish. Best of luck in your future endeavors!

*puts on moderator hat, clears throat*

We've reordered the list. It's now more or less in spine order, but (as you may know), Masters of Cinema "reset" the spine numbers when they started releasing titles on blu-ray, which means that we can't have both DVD and blu-ray releases in 100% spine order. Hopefully the new order will be a satisfying compromise where both are mostly in spine order.

The new order has DVD's first, blu-rays second. With titles released both on blu-ray and DVD, the format that was released first "gets" the title. If the release date is the same for both blu-ray and DVD the blu-ray "gets" it. Masters of Cinema currently release most of their titles as "dual format" blu-ray+DVD sets, which means new titles will be added to the end of the list.

The first blu-ray on the list is Mad Detective, currently at number 139.

We added Comizi d'Amore to the list, since it seems clear to us that it is intended as a "co-feature" in the way it's presented on the Masters of Cinema website and we removed the short films Aventure Malgache and Bon Voyage, since it seems clear those are extras (on Hitchcock's Lifeboat).

Over on the Unofficial ICM Forum we have an active discussion about this blog post. I think the forum format is a little more conducive for a back-and-forth about this topic. Join us at:

Is there any official web site/book for this?
I can only find user-made lists throughout the web like this: http://www.listology.com/kenji/list/british-film-institute-360-classics

I guess Plae kao (1979)/The Scar is the wrong movie. It appears to be listed as The Scar (1978) and there are many other wrong dates on that list (you can also see that from the list order, like Metropolis listed as 1925, etc.)

So it looks like it's really Kieslowski's Blizna (1976)/The Scar.

The source for this list is a book, "360 film classics from the National Film and Television Archive" by Nick James from 1998 (WorldCat no. 39259278) - originally compiled in 1982.

I wrote and asked a librarian at the MoMA library, which holds a copy, about the title "The Scar". I received this reply:
quote:
the listing, on p. 24 reads:

1978. Prae Kow (The Scar). Cherd Songsri

so it appears to be the correct movie.

Thank you! Great! New lists! Great new lists! :-)

I like the new icon style, it's wonderfully naivistic. Less is more.

Moar lists! Rarrr!

@nymets138:

Wrong version. The one on Hulu Plus is from 1958 and is included in the Criterion Collection release "Martha Graham: Dance on Film". It is not the same as the one in the National Film Registry.

@Wloper: Some movies have multiple entries on IMDb but only one on TSPDT.

Histoire(s) du Cinema e.g. has 8 entries on IMDb, since it's in 8 parts, but TSPDT counts it as one.
