Unbelievably problematic premise, horrible script, scattershot direction, immensely boring in places... future cult classic. Reminded me of The Visitor in terms of having prodigious visual effects and lacking in everything else. This is the best looking trash movie I've seen- a lot of money went into this. The first ten minutes and the end are well worth seeking out (this is on Amazon Prime at the moment), tho the former is marred significantly by the narration. Oh! And the score is pretty decent.
As rough as this movie is, I must explain why I didn't hit the thumbs down: on paper, it's refreshing to see a mother/daughter pairing as the focal point of a genre pic. Granted, it is obviously written and directed by a man and every attempt at subtext or metaphor (Ohhh! The Monster represents
a manifestation of the mother and her alcoholism. Deep, man!
Occasionally effective, though more often structurally clunky in that unique giallo way. Still, fairly watchable procedural slasher. A modern remake would do well to not redeem and enable Rosseni (which is where I thought the movie was going).
Highlight for me was the stylish opening with the Morricone soundtrack and the girls riding by on bikes with the red filter. Peter Strickland definitely pays homage in his crawl for Duke of Burgundy. Note to everyone: watch Duke of Burgundy.
Full of teeth. This movie would be shocking if it was released today. A great dry run for Discreet Charm. Though I will say, for a movie with "exterminating" in the title, I'm disappointed that Buñuel didn't go the scatological route. There were a couple references to hygiene and one comment about the smell coming out of the house, but where were they going to the bathroom?!?!
Genuinely puzzled as to why that wasn't addressed.
For years, I misunderstood the title to be Thirty Two Short Films About Elliott Gould.
Going into this with no knowledge of Glenn Gould, I was highly impressed with this film's holistic approach to his life. If only all bio pics could be this inventive and honest. A triumph of form and content.
Real smear campaign against the Khmer Rouge. Totally biased film by noted propagandist Rithy Panh, whose experience witnessing first-hand the absolute worst in humanity amounts to nothing more than western middle class paranoia. Avoid.*
*Don't avoid. This film is deeply moving with poetic narration and an inventive conceit- which, while not always successful, hits the mark more often than not and makes bearable the viewing experience of Panh's horrific account.
Point Break deserves a fresh look. The plot and some of the scenes are admittedly ridiculous and have become the butt of many jokes, but it's so much more than that. The film unravels as this wonderfully coherent tale of spiritual corruption, brotherhood, and the desire for freedom. And, of course, there's a heaping of adrenaline-fueled action scenes that weave seamlessly into the story.
Plus, looking at it 23 years later, it perfectly bridges the gap between 80s/90s crime/action flicks by playing on old tropes (see: John C. McGinley, who is tremendous in a non-winky role) and popularizing new ones (the parkour chase scene, tight pacing/editing).
Also deserving of special mention is Swayze's hair which was arguably at its stylistic peak.
