Expanding this was a dumb idea. Before, it felt like every film on the list was there for a reason, significant in some way if not necessarily good. Now it's got The Last Fucking Samurai on it. 60 films per year with little benefit of hindsight is just too much.
total film being their usual vapid self. a good proportion of these movies are very intentionally hilarious, but of course that would deprive the list of the 'point and laugh' smugness it's going for...
if the subject is a failing marriage, that means the film is about the absence of love, which means its subject is still romance. so both Woolf and Paradiso should be here.
"To my mind, this list is the true litmus test of a serious film fan-- more so than anything else on this site. Those folks with close to or more than 900 checks can rightly consider themselves cinematic badasses. Go ahead, strut around a little." The list is too slanted towards 'serious classics' - a 'serious film fan' should have more diverse tastes than that.

like a really long, mediocre episode of i love lucy. calling this a good classic comedy is devaluing preston sturges' entire output.Movie comment on Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice
