I really loved the film. Beautiful production design, and cinematography. Cooper & Mulligan were whimsical and brilliant. Lovely addition to Cooper’s directorial filmography.
It was a fun little film. What I liked about it, was the fact that you could definitely see Spielberg's influence on it (not everyone will find that a positive thing, but I do). This mainly comes from the cinematography, which is much different than most animated films. It felt more of a stop motion than computer generated film at times, due to the dolly, jib, & sliding camera moves.
I'm only writing this because I think this movie gets a bad wrap, and its kind of a hidden treasure.
Just finished the film. So amazing! Reading the comments, I don't think people realize or appreciate the level of Art Direction & Design in this film. Eve Stewart's work is brilliant. Pops of color & palette, the incredible nuance of form, the design of the town square, the epic scale of some of the set pieces... Just saying
It's so fresh on my mind and Lincoln is not, but I having a difficult time which Art Direction was more superior. (*Lincoln won the Oscar over Les that year)
This movie was TERRiBLE... I believe they forgot it was based off a book in which had complete character development. They didn't have to write anything, IT WAS ALREADY WRITTEN! I have no remorse or compassion for these characters, mainly because there is no development.
The biggest problem with this movie, outside of shorthand screen play, is its editting. It jumps and doesn't really care about continuity. There are plot holes, gaps, and continuity issues throughout the entire picture.
Please save yourself the effort and never watch this!
First off, of all music videos WHY would you call out this one????? It was directed by Spike Jonze and it is a SHORT story, has character arches, and a plot. Theres not even a shot of the band playing, or a close up shots on the lead singer lip synching..... It even has above-the-line credits!
This film might not be the best short film (which I agree), but seriously... just because it has music behind it doesn't mean it is not a short film. Look at Micheal Jackson's music videos... Would not consider Thriller or Smoth Criminal a short film???
It's silly for anyone to say that music videos are not a short films in themselves. Most might confine themselves to a stereotypical music video structure, but they still are considered short films.
And why should not be allowed??? Are we in a contest?
This movie is fantastic... COMPLETELY underrate, and one of Edgar Wright's finest films.
It hurts to know that it did so poor in the box office, and a sequel will probably never see the light of day :(
This movie might have set standards and was once scary, but it absolutely does not hold up to in it's age. Jamie Lee Curtis's acting and Carpenter's direction of the movie were all over the place. Be honest with yourself, did you really care if Jamie got knocked off 30min in... Of course not!
There were numerous plot holes, and unsatisfying plot points. Worst of all, you can watch behind the scenes interviews with the crew (dvd), and it's as if they put it together in a weekend just to make a quick buck. Which would be fine, but they didn't care about it till the movie was a success. And for some reason, we put this film on a pedestal as if the film makers should be praised for it.
Again, it is an artifact in film history, but stop with the "I LOVE THIS MOVIE" or "ITS PURE GENIUS"... Because it stands on the shoulders of some great films and I would hate for future enthusiasts to think we thought this deserved our admiration.
I am a little disturbed that there are people here that didn't enjoy this movie. What a fantastic film. Even the non-linear style story telling was fantastic.
Who cares if it is not traditional documenting, it has a REAL clear message and story.
Speachless and Tremendously Moving would be the best way to describe this film.
Cartoons today definitely do not compare, but I will have to agree with Ogisha... this wasn't the best bugs bunny episode I have ever seen. There are much better ones, although there are some amazing animation techniques used in this short.
