Some films just fly right past me. In these movies, I don't see the point. I'm not following. I don't care. This is one of those films.

This movie is wonderful in every way. It is wonderful for the costumes alone. You could turn off the subtitles, ignore the story (which is Shakespearean good), and enjoy an excellent evening, solely admiring the costumes.

What makes the movie hard to watch is the MacGuffin. Because while you kind of know that you aren't supposed to think about the Human Project. That the movie is really about the journey, and not the reason to go there. But then again, you know, I'd like to know more about this dystopia: how did Britain become the only country of relative order? Was there a war? How did that play out? It's all very curious to me.

And it isn't completely irrelevant to the plot. Maybe the overall big picture of their times explains why there's so many dogs and cats. You want to see the big dystopia reflected in the small details. Rather than guess together a vague picture of the dystopia, you want to see how the overall structure of their dystopian world breaks down into minutiae.

Good movie, still.

Somebody had recommended "Dawn of the dead." I should have asked which one. He meant the 1979 Romero version. I really should have asked.

In just about every shot I mumbled something about "implausible," "idiotic," …

Absolutely masterly. The two girls are driving in the car, and talking casually, in broad daylight!, but I'm scared. That's because behind them, coming closer, is a beige car resembling the one that drives around the killer. The car is not pushing itself into view, but it's in every shot, in every frame. And it's approaching. Like I said: masterly.

It was originally a theater play. While watching, I kept thinking: why are they not making any use of film? It's all standing and talking. Where's making it a *film*. And then I read that it used to be theater. And then it occurred to me: this is preserving a great theater play for generations after. Played by some great actors in their prime.

Fantastic piece.

I watched this today for the first time. On almost every scene I thought: gosh, I've seen that in so many movies before! But of course, when Die Hard came out, all of it was new. I wish I'd seen it before watching all the rip-offs.

The first hour is really difficult to watch. Although I suppose it is a good movie, I will not recommend it to anybody.
