First few episodes built tension and friction, to the point of being challenging to sit through. But it then hits its stride into total quality, with a maturity akin to the development of Barry across its seasons. Very good.
In a sea of Disney and Marvel, this 'high sci-fi' take on the genre was quite refreshing. This, just like everything else Star Wars and Marvel, is pastiche at this point. The female lead was compelling. Each of the key characters were well fleshed out and charismatic, other than the terrible Irish accent of Charlie Hunnam. You have to admire Snyder for trying to create a new canon, with the depth and gravity required.
Netflix seems to have a hardon for psychopaths, whether it is in the many true crime docs, or this. Having a psychopath as a protagonist doesn't work. It's a bit like watching No Country For Old Men from the perspective of Javier Bardem's character. There's nothing likeable, or even human, about Fassbender's character. The violence and sadism is senseless, and gives a creepy, crawly sense throughout the film that some anti-social teenager, somewhere in the world, is going to find this cool, try to emulate it all and kill a whole bunch of people just as senselessly.
That said, the style and pacing of the film was slick. Fassbender is magnetic, despite the major problems with his character.
First half is great. The Arabic lead puts in a good innings and Gyllenhall is compelling. However, the second half is terrible, like Room terrible. Cardboard acting. Nonsensical plot. Screen writing to the effect of
The use of technical nautical language and the rapid-fire script create a highly compelling contrast piece to the slow-moving, tense, claustrophic film, Das Boot. Had a similar tempo to Dunkirk.
If you're on this site, you've watched a lot of movies. Tarantino has created a movie for us. One that is so playful in bringing together elements from many of the great films of that Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone generation. If you've seen enough films, you'll find the references so on point, or so subverted
(i.e. Bruce Lee)
that it is wonderfully funny and each scene a complete surprise. A must watch for the icheckmovies crowd.
Made from archival media footage, this film is important in chronicling the malignant racism of Australians and the cesspool that is the Australian sports media landscape. Despite the seriousness of the content, this is a hugely compelling watch.
A surprisingly good action film. The setting of the daily commute to and from work resonated was realistic and well done. Has elements of Taken, Unstoppable, Saw, The Fugitive and Spartacus, yet even though it is derivative, it still feels fresh, which it owes to its well-paced plot and cinematography. Liam Neeson excels as a relatable and sympathetic action hero.
Probably the most interesting timing of any film in 2017 and likely will resonate in the future as a film where it is difficult to disentangle art from life. After Louis CK's catalytic involvement in the #metoo movement, he releases a film about sex, consent, sexual power and relationships in the entertainment industry, and even comes with a gratuitous masturbation scene - artfully directed by the experienced (jerking) hand of Louis CK. A very interesting viewing experience after reading about what he did in his younger years with his abuse of power.
The Last Jedi does a great job at exploring the complexity of the light, grey and dark sides of the force with a nuanced Kyo Red and Luke Skywalker, but otherwise lacks creativity and imagination. An interesting contrast to this film is Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets- which does a much more creative and fleshed out world but lacks the wish-fulfillment of seeing jedis and sith.
