Color me surprised, it wasn't as bad as I expected. I have read the books and hated/loathed them and they are one of the biggest loads of crap ever to be printed on paper, so the movie saved a lot by being less crappy.
Of course, the film isn't good either.
Luckily, they had edited out or rewritten some of the worst parts of "BDSM" and the movie is, glad to say, a lot less sexist, twisted, misguided and idiotic than the books. Which isn't saying a lot, but it's something. Thumbs up for bringing up topics about consent and other little quirky things about D/s relationships, which can be often a bit messy.
I can't recommend this to... anyone. If you're leaning towards the kinky, then go watch Secretary. If you're not, then please, don't watch this and think that "this is true BDSM" because it's far from it.
The storyline was void of any emotional tension or substance, but Luke Evans was absolutely fantastic. I have no idea what the casting director/department were thinking while filling out the other roles, especially the turks were so akward it made me uncomfortable at best.
Apparently, as I've just scoured the internets and educated myself, this movie was supposed to be more historically accurate than most films about Dracula, but it hardly seems so. The action, beautifully shot and almost seamlessly CGI'ed, were some of the reasons this film seems empty and boring.
I will definitely check out Luke Evans' other films after this one. Sadly, Sarah Gadon wasn't up to par, not by a long shot. Evans seemed to carry the film all by himself from beginning to end. Charles Dance was a nice touch, I've always enjoyed his performances, no matter how big or small.
I can't remember ever having seen such magnificent costuming. The costumes just took my breath away, absolutely stunning.
Mia Wasikowska fit her role like a glove. Also, Ezra Miller, fantastic as always. I can't say the same for the other cast though, or maybe Rhys Ifans, he was great.
If you like period pieces, definitely check this out. Or if you like to see absolutely fantastic craftsmanship with the costumes, there's plenty of eye candy.
Absolutely stellar casting. I have problems watching movies with too many "big names" because that somehow overwhelmes the characters themselves and makes it harder for me to immerse myself in the story. This time the casting was seamless and it was like all the parts were in a way typecast & perfect actors/actresses found for each role.
Also, I've read the book by Jonathan Tropper and the book was less than average, but this film was absolutely wonderful. While reading the book I found myself thinking "This would be perfect as a screenplay, but not as a book..." and it's like they adapted the book page by page. Wonderful work!
If you don't like slightly goofy but a bit dark dramedy, don't bother. This works fine with those who like the genre, but very little for anyone who doesn't.
Adam Driver was my favorite! Or maybe not, Tina Fey & Jane Fonda were so great that I might need to choose several favorites...
Completely broke my heart. Unfortunately I know too many women who have gone through breast cancer and some who didn't survive, so this felt very real. There's nothing unrealistic about this, this happens every day, somewhere, to someone.
Julianne Moore has earned every bit of praise for this one. There's nothing I want to add to that.
However, this film wasn't without it's faults:
1. Plot/storyline was very predictable, cheesy and almost straight-to-DVD quality.
I'd like to think it was done partially on purpose, so that the inevidability and horror of Alzheimer's would have more impact. It was like watching a horror movie when you KNOW something's gonna happen but you still keep watching.
2. The storyline where Alice is informed that she carries a familial form of Alzheimer's is first discussed as a shock and a tragedy within the family, which it rightfully is, but the whole issue is then dropped. Why someone decided not to follow that particular and very important arch is beyond me.
After that, the whole issue of hereditary early onset Alzheimer's is mentioned maybe twice during the rest of the film, and barely brushed upon.
Bonus points for Kristen Steward, she has really picked herself up after the horrific car crash named Twilight.
Absolutely nothing in common with actual historical events. The only reason for me to suffer through this hot mess of a film was Eva Green, she's fabulous.
Oh, I did think of another good reason for watching this: the costuming. I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals as well.
The storyline wasn't anything sensational or earth shattering, but I absolutely loved this film. It's like a breath of fresh air to see films of POC, especially historical films. The whitewashing of any historical figures and epoch movies has been nagging me quite some time.
Kurt Russell has gotten absolutely wonderful over the years. One of those oldschool gritty action stars. The plot of the film isn't anything special but Russell, Dillon and rest of the cast make it just that much better.
Finally a movie which has young breast cancer patients and survivors. All the other movies and documentaries I've seen, have almost exclusively older women. Also, very realistic without being too mushy.
I love Angela Bassett and I love musicals, but I did not love this movie. The plot was way below mediocre and the closing scenes were cringeworthy. There were many big names in the cast, so I was hoping for the movie to not suck so much, but I was bitterly disappointed.
1. In 99% of all castings, it's not a good idea to cast a married couple to play a married couple.
2. Christina Applegate and Johnathon Schaech divorced in 2 years after this film was released. Coincidence? I think not!
I can't believe how three people can lack this much chemistry on screen. First Matt and Suzanne and then Matt and Kate. There wasn't even a second when these two pairings were believable. I can't believe I watched this crap 'til the end.
The shittiest movie I've ever seen. Cheaply made, terrible acting & casting and the worst of all: BORING. Also, this has absolutely nothing to do with the original movie.
OK, maybe not the shittiest ever, Adam Sandler has made a lot of really bad ones which take the cake, but this came very close.
I haven't seen CGI this bad in over a decade. Who uses lensflares anymore? Seriously, LENS FLARES. Also, the dream sequences where Maya walks in the dream corridor, it looked like it was copy-pasted from a clipart picture CD from 1999.
One of those films where I ended up thinking is this about an unreliable narrator or maybe something else. Definitely underrated. Mickey Rourke was absolutely amazing.
One of the weirdest movies I've ever seen, and I've seen my share of the weird. The dancing sequences are beautiful and incredible, and the horrific, violent scenes are devastating but still beautifully crafted, all hallmarks of a great, memorable film.

Absolutely gorgeous dresses and costuming, wonderfully eerie setting and superb acting. I haven't seen anything better in years.Anya Taylor-Joy and Romola Garai are two bright, shining stars and the other cast is comparably immaculate.

New post-modern French cinema has never looked this good. The casting was perfect, especially Audrey Tautou, as always. As I was watching, I felt some resemblance to Bertolt Brecht's work, but I can't explain exactly why, can't put my finger on it.
This is one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen, highly symbolic, magical, sweet, sad, romantic, modern fairytale.
