This being my first Renoir films, one of the first things that I noticed, was that La Grande Illusion doesn’t look or feel like a film released in 1937. If I didn't know any better I would have said this was a late 40’s or early 50’s film. The acting and dialog feel very loose and real, very unlike anything i’ve seen from the 1930’s.

The story overall is pretty good, and it develops at a nice steady pace. La Grande Illusion never feels tiring or too long. Overall i would say it's length is spot on.

The cinematography and different camera shots are great and one of the best I've seen from this era. Really surprised my to be honest.
As mentioned the dialog is great, and this works in part thanks to the amazing cast. All the different characters are well written and convincing, not to mention very likable. Also i love that correct languages are used for French, German and English characters, something that even today is not standard practice.

At the end of it all, I really enjoyed this film.
Looking forward to more from Renoir

Im a huge fan of Shichinin no samurai (Seven Samurai), on which this movie is based. So i was kinda hesitant to watch this to be honest. But now that i've watched it, i really liked it... alot.

Sure it's not as good as Seven Samurai, but it is still very much a great movie.
In fact it is now one of my favorite Westerns for sure.

This one has been on my watchlist for over 10 years. Kept postponing watching it so many times in those years. But now that i have finally watched it, all i can say is. Oh boy, this is something truly special.

Didn't like the ending at all, really unnecessary and didn't fit the movie at all.To be fair though the first 90 minutes where also mediocre at best.

I usually like westerns, but this one didn't really do it for me. Didn't really get drawn into the story and the acting was nothing special.

I'm going to need some time digesting this film. All kinds of thoughts are running through my head right now.

The shots and cinematography are some of the best I've seen. The story unfolds nice and slow, revealing only what is necessary at the right time. With a performance of a lifetime by Harry Dean Stanton.

Great art-house film, highly recommended!

It took me a while to get into it as i didn't really like the first 20-30 minutes or so. But i'm so glad i just kept watching this! Getting closer to the end, you could just feel something terrible was going to happen. I just sat there, in full suspense waiting for the ending. And when it did finally happen, i totally wasn't ready for it. It was still very shocking.

This is one of those films that will stay with you forever. Whether you liked it or not, there will always remain this feeling inside you which you can't quite explain. A feeling that only this film can give you, after the first time you've watched it.

The cinematography is just great. Every scene is beautifully created and shot. Fantastic job on the camerawork and the lighting is stunning.

The scene in the boat where the girl is singing, was my absolute favorite. Perfect in every way!

Also Robert Mitchum delivers a solid performance.

I'm not quite sure why, but i was really drawn into this by Gelsomina. Her eyes and emotions were hauntingly creepy but also very innocent.

Sad but satisfying story, my first experience with Fellini.

Ralph Fiennes is just perfect in his role as M. Gustave. His character made me smile from start to finish and only once before have ever been so entertained by a single actor and film.

The other one being Peter O'Toole as T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia.
