After the interestingly dark but misguided Lost World and competent but bland JP3, we finally get a sequel that recreates the wonder, humour and suspense of the original. Nice to see Hammond's vision come to life.
There's something wonderfully brilliant about Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee having an epic gothic fight scene whilst funky upbeat 1970s music plays
We have a hero in a white vest called John trapped in a building that's been taken over by terrorists. He's now on the rooftop whilst helicopters, under the command of technically good guys who are being portrayed negatively in comparison to the previously established good guys, arrive. Helicopter mistakes John for a terrorist and shoots at him before being taken out.
Perhaps it was wrong of me to expect a series of mini Tales From The Crypt styled segments, but goddamn this is a piece of shit. There are a couple of average ones like T and U, a few amusing moments in N and W, and some slightly 'interesting' scenes in X and Y....but for the most part it's just completely stupid, vulgar and disturbing like the part with the kitten...not to mention the segments such as F, L and Z in their entirety, and the one with the strange Nazi Fox stripper (I forget which letter it was). It just goes to show that sometimes giving writers/directors complete control can be a very bad thing.
I was always interested in Elijah Wood playing such a character in Sin City and this continues that same effect more powerfully because, after all, it's Frodo Baggins playing Gollum with mother issues. I've not seen the original yet but this is an example of a remake that's actually pretty well executed and powerful.
Another strong (and suitably weird) entry for Ben Wheatley's filmography. I recommend seeing it at the cinema if possible, although it is a strange feeling coming home with the knowledge I could catch its television debut under an hour later.
Not something I'd want to watch every year but it is very good, and one of the most well-made and well-shot films out there, very glad I got it on bluray.

By far the maddest of the Mad Max films. Loved it. I was initially skeptical about the lack of Gibson but Hardy kills it.Movie comment on Dracula A.D. 1972
