The link posted (mod-edit: link removed) IS the original East German version, NOT the U.S. version. The U.S. version is listed as 79 minutes and the East German version is listed as 93 minutes. The version posted runs 90 minutes and is in German with English subtitles. According to the Wikipedia entry:
"The first American edition was only 82 minutes long. All references to Hiroshima were edited out. The American Hawling became a Russian, named Orloff. The Russian Arseniev became the American Heddingway; the Pole Soltyk became the French Durand. The original, uncut version of the film was re-released under the title The Silent Star by the DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2004."

The copy linked includes all the Hiroshima references, the characters listed and is titled The Silent Star. As there is a three minute difference, maybe there are a few scenes are missing or the original run time is just incorrect. However, it is definitely NOT the cut U.S. version, which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Owh3MFn6R_A

I couldn't get past the stupid suit until the last 15 minutes, what a horribly fake outfit.

It wasn't exactly great to start with, but Dom DeLuise ruined this movie for me.

My brother died on the set of that movie! One of the mechanical spiders just went haywire and tore him to pieces, and Tom Selleck just stood there and watched him die.

From the BFI-website:
Blending in-depth history and criticism, this book balances the commercial blockbusters with local success stories from Eastern Europe to Hong Kong. There are entries on Dreamworks' Shrek, Pixar's Toy Story, and Disney's Jungle Book, but you will also find pieces on Germany's silhouette-based The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the oldest surviving animated feature; on the thirty year production of Richard Williams' legendary opus, The Thief and the Cobbler; and on the lost work of Argentina's Quinto Cristiani, who reputedly made the first animated feature in 1917.
Note: It should be Quirino Christiani, sloppy work by the BFI website!

Some of the backgrounds are pretty but the quality of the animation itself is embarrassing and incredibly outdated for 2006 movie. The bog standard story doesn't help either.

UNESCO asked film archives to compile and publish a list of approximately 15 films each country considers to be representative of its most significant national cinematic heritage. The Song That Reached His Heart, An Unselfish Love and this film were chosen as they are 3 of 13 one-reel films promoting colonization of Canada (the other 10 have not been found) and are some of the earliest Canadian history caught on film.

If the comedy is that good, isn't there anybody who could make subtitles so we can all enjoy it?

It's an intended omission, iCM removed it so people can finish the list.
