Hilariously bizarre, if a tad extreme. I can imagine a modern audience finding this ‘problematic’, though I found it’s numerous transgressions funny in a ‘omg she’s being raped by midgets, omg this has been planned and is her kink, omg now she’s whipping them’ kind of way. Worth the ride if you can stomach it. The costumes are beautiful, the stories engaging and titillating, and the violence campy. Imagine if John Waters decided to make a movie about sexual violence in Edo era Japan. Surprised this hasn’t received more attention and isn’t in any lists.
