It never managed to fully engage me, the story felt tame and somewhat predictable. Characters were introduced without giving them any depth or a proper place in Craig's life..
I mostly liked the acting of the main cast tho.
A beautiful and engaging film, with a nice rhythm and some really nice visuals. Also great acting. Some moments were a little easy to see coming as the film developed, but overall it pulled me in and I really cared for Milla and Moses
The first time I saw this in my film studies class, I struggled getting into it and almost fell asleep. But then, after having a seminar on it, where we discussed the topics, the storytelling style and how every creative decision here is filled with meaning, I saw it again by myself. And the second time I fell in love with it. I even cried a couple of times. I think - at least in my case - that this is a film where it is worth doing some research beforehand and knowing a little bit about what you're about to see (which is the opposite of how I usually like to enter a film world), like the culture, history and traditions of the Gullah people. But for this beautiful and powerful film, it is worth the extra effort.
Finally got to see this one, and I was surprised at how much I liked it! There were some great moments, and I liked the visual style.
My only issue, which I am sure was also intentional, was how little personality the swedish characters had, they seemed more like ants in a colony, without personal thoughts. It is an understandable move, but I would have liked it better if I had been invited into their way of thinking, or even to siding with them. Instead they become caricatures who act funny.
This was a fun watch, with a nice aesthetic and a great performance by Gyllenhaal. There are some enjoyable kicks at the (commercial) art world, and some truth spoken about the meaning of art.
It felt a little like the film kept changing its main focus, as if it wasn't quite decided what the main point of it was. This could have worked if it was a series instead of a film, but at the end of this, it felt like I had unfinished business with the late artist Dease, as well as other characters.
But if you're a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, I'd say this is worth the watch:)
Slow and full of poetic dialogue, but beautiful in its visual style and in its spoken imagery. The idea of sacrifice repeats in different shapes. We quite enjoyed it, and found it almost trance-like to watch.
Found this film so funny and beautiful. It is odd, but in the best meaning of the word. Sometimes you need to skip the romantic comedies and the action dramas, and take the time to watch some poetic film art. Especially if you're not sure if you have the patience for it.
I just wrote a long ass comment about this film, and it disappeared when I clicked 'add comment' so here is a summary
The film is okay, I cried a few times BUT as a Norwegian it is incredibly obvious that the film is written and directed by a non-Norwegian, leaving out the most important part of the whole thing: the reaction of the people, the rose march, the songs and the poetry, the sea of flowers, the speeches of the king and the prime minister, the people responding with love against Breivik's hatred.
My main problems tho:
People speaking English, ruined the performances
Poorly written dialogues
Hilarious americanisation - for example, the prime minister's coworkers calling him 'Sir'. I'm 99% certain the people who worked with him everyday just called him Jens.
Conclusion: The film is watchable, certain times even good, but clearly not made for a Norwegian audience.
I was looking for a trashy film to watch and relax my brain, but this was just painful. I pulled through though, and my brain even made some effort to analyse it, which the film didn't really deserve. Honestly, it's just the stripped down storyline of Mean Girls in a modern setting that is almost like a parody only that it takes itself far too seriously.
The film also seems confused with who its target audience is, which I'd say is where most of its issues start
This film was really beautiful in both cinematography and story. Fausta, the female lead is really mesmerising to watch, and the character is complex and a proper narrative to lead. There is a lot of symbolism, both explicit and implicit, which made it even more fun to actively watch - and I suggest to those who found it boring to watch it again with someone and actually discuss the shots while watching. It's a film that's gonna stick with me for a while, and potatoes will never be the same...
A really interesting and creative way to tell a story, I've never seen anything quite like it. Was funny, moving, and at times, even a little unsettling. I'll be looking out for what Kitty Green does next.
The film is beautiful to look at, but it never 'hooked' me. This distance made me far more critical of it than I probably would have been watching it in the cinema. I appreciated the mood, but found Gosling acting style a little off in such a naturalistic diegisis. From the start, the trope of the boy needing a father figure annoyed me simply because they made it so obvious, and I wish the mother had been given a more interesting storyline. I was also little impressed by the cliché scene of half naked women, where Gosling is basically framed by boobs and awkward ladies. We get that the guys are assholes, why do filmmakers always think it's necessary to put them in situations with exploited women to prove it? Oh right, they want use the female body to attract more male audiences. My bad.
I was otherwise entertained by the film and I'm glad I've seen it, even if it didn't meet my expectations.
Unlike Ikkegoemikke, I saw the plottwist coming miles ahead, and the film was fairly predictable in other aspects as well, which unfortunately made it pretty boring. I adore Viola Davis, but this film does not portray how brilliant she can be.
Actually, I would have liked for the story to have been taken further, and made more intense. If they had gotten rid of the plot twist they could have spent more time delving into the psych of the women and explore the impact their revenge rampage would have on them emotionally and morally.
Also, the end does not make sense to me, they could have made much more out of that.
watch it if you want to see a young Charlie Sheen, dude from 24, the husband in The Big C and a guy from NCIS Los Angeles. I was to distracted by the familiar faces to really enjoy the film tho
One of my favourite movies, simply because it has:
* Some really good moments of second hand embarrassment
* Awesome humour
* Awesome language
* Great music
* Sex Gods
* Some really terrible outfits

Felt a little overly dramatic, I think it could have gained from being more subtle and having a slow burn before the plot twists.Movie comment on Troll
