We're always quick to praise a story that shows how a friendship is formed, but it is also a difficult thing to show a friendship in its prime and have us believe it wholeheartedly. Road to Eldorado achieves this to the 'nth degree, animating possibly the most believable odd couple of my youth. Putting aside the moral ambiguity of the plot, this movie is worth a watch for this friendship alone.
Like its titular character, this film is really darn good at telling a story. Animation, characters, music, voice work, checked off the list with the most beautiful calligraphy possible.
Unfortunately, also akin to its titular character, it's not very good at ending a story.
The animation is stunning! A wonderfully unique, creepy and expressive art style, peppered with subtle, realistic character movements reminiscent of Ghibli's best work. Couple that with great voice work, a haunting musical score, and the irresistible storytelling of Neil Gaiman, and what you have is a true masterpiece. It's like Alice in Wonderland, with the creepiness factor cranked up to the nth degree . . . not really sure who the target audience is though.
This movie is like a partially burned, cheese omelette. Delicious at times, too much at others, and ripe with the potential to cling to my innards in both pleasant and horrible ways for many years to come. Amazing choreography, wonderful music and a sickeningly perfect twist are the feathers in the film's cap. An anime-esque, over-the-top villain, and some awkward pacing/dialogue moments are the blackeyes. Not for the faint of heart!
