I heard this was a good movie for a long time, so I tried streaming it a year or two ago, and accidentally watched the other Edge of Seventeen instead, the gay coming of age movie from the 90s. Finally got around to watching this one too. It was fine. I think the gay one is better.
The strongest part is the beginning, but it stays entertaining throughout. Knowing virtually nothing about chess, I was disappointed to learn that Beth Harmon was not a real person, and that no woman has actually done this yet.
Patti Harrison did an amazing job. I hope we see her in more stuff, and I hope this marks a turning point in more trans actors being allowed to play cis roles, and less of the reverse.
Recaptures the spirit of the original better than The Trip to Italy did (in that Brydon's character returns to being a good-humored family man who enjoys deflating some of Coogan's character's hot air). However, the final joke of the movie is a really unworthy stereotype, that soured the film for me.
I believe Beautiful Daughters and Une autre femme I watched back when Netflix would ship you DVDs, I'm not sure where they can be found now that that service is discontinued. TransGeneration was available on DVD at a video store with an exceptionally large collection, it closed in 2015. Probably also hard to come by now! Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Increasing Momo's age from 6 to 12 surely made the story more filmable, but much of the novel's charm is lost in direct proportion to the protagonist's innocence. Still a worthwhile watch.
The first season is some of the best television I've ever seen. The subsequent two are enjoyably creative and maintain the neonoir feel well, but don't have as much to say, and can't live up to the masterpiece that was the twisted dynamic between Jessica and Kilgrave (a pitch perfect villain), and the execution of season one's survivorhood arc.
This is so great on all counts... plot, humor, representation, cinematography, editing, and every actor in it, especially the leads. More films of this caliber, please!
When it's good, it's really good, when it's bad, it's pretty bad. Still well worthwhile, especially in the mid-late seasons, as the focus moves away from Piper's relatively bland arc, and becomes a more genuine ensemble show. From seasons 5-7, Taystee arguably takes over as the lead role, if there can be said to be one, which is a welcome shift. The show also grows some real teeth in the later seasons; rather than just taking on for-profit prisons, it begins critiquing incarceration in general, and spends much of its last season exploring alternative models like restorative practices. Oh, also, I love that gay shit.
The special effects, acting, choreography, and dialogue were top-notch, and this film ranks as enjoyable as just about any Marvel film. The political subtext, however, was a little more thinly veiled and aggravating than usual – it seems that we are meant to identify with aggressive, unilateral militarism that results in civilian casualties (which is presented as "freedom") and reject measures for accountability (which are presented as evilly socialist via menacing phrases like "the collective good"). Though there is lip service paid to making both sides of the conflict relatable, the fact that "Civil War" is a subtitle to "Captain America" makes the position of the film clear.
I'm disappointed that I'm the first person to check this movie. There were some cheesy aspects to it, and it's distressing at times, but I think this movie handles transgender issues better than just about any other one I've seen.
I just finished reading Neuromancer, and wanted nothing more than to see a visualized version of it. Absurdly, decades after the novel first paved the way for cyberpunk, a movie version has yet to be made. This animated film is more than a sufficient substitute, however - dealing with many of the same themes (downloaded consciousness, artificial intelligence, computerized society, the cyborg, etc). Some great action sequences as well!
Most entertaining film I've seen in theaters in ages. As a lifelong fan of the comics I found it true to the spirit of the source material, and Spielberg is the perfect storyteller to bring this adventure to life on screen. Every scene is a joy to watch. I can't wait for further Tintin albums to be on the big screen!
