Sorry to be that guy but Hugh Glass was born about twenty years after the French-Indian War ended. I would have guessed it was set earlier too.
I agree that the story wasn't too great. Visuals were nice, though, sort of reminded me of Blade Runner. Wiseman's direction could have been better. Overall, though, it had what I wanted in a sf movie.
This is a very poorly made film. I also think it's responsible for causing the shift to sound before the technology was really ready, certainly most early talkies are quite clumsy, especially compared to the cinematically rich silents. In any case, the hybrid sound/silent thing here was arbitrary and the casual use of black face isn't doing this any favors.
Lacks the visual panache I expect from Wise or for that matter Noir in general. What's even worse is the writing--this is filled with awful characters whose motivation doesn't make sense and the dialogue is particularly bad, especially the Bible quoting detective. 3/10
Kind of goes nowhere, especially some of the subplots such as the ones with the kids and their friends. I found the catalyst to the conflict between the women silly and contrived. Overall, below average.
I'd like to see the tacky first sentence of the description removed, it doesn't fit in with the rest of the description and it isn't necessary. I'd also like to see a proper link under source, as it is it actually links back to itself.
I'm surprised to see someone describe this as dreamlike. The content is odd but it's presented in a straightforward way, which I think is an astonishingly bad choice on Malle's part. I was hoping for something with some atmosphere. This film is atrocious.
