Sorcerer-slash-Rabbi summons an ancient demon to get control over a powerful servant made of clay called the Golem. The Golem's terrible first task? Getting groceries.
You know, a lot of great period pieces present us with people who can't articulate why exactly they conform to an existence that clearly makes them unhappy. Naive viewers can watch them and think thank god things aren't like that anymore, thank god we have the tools to understand, thank god we're ready to look inside ourselves. But what about this film? What about the news? How many people out there are ready to do awful things and double down only to say "I don't know" when questioned about the extent of their inhumanity? When's the last time you've thought about why you did the worst thing you've ever done? This film is hilarious btw.
The kids call it unalive now. It's still just suicide. Except in this film -where a family kills themselves after systematically destroying the objects that make up their identity in a world they've come to detest- the term seems quite fitting. Good movie. Brutal.
when your kids hate you so much but don’t have the emotional skills to cope with that so they end up hating themselves and destroying the future you planned for them because it’s not the one they want. yeah. i'm thinking toxic parenting really is a curse.
Living is easy with eyes closed, said John Lennon. Only we can’t close our eyes anymore. The light is too bright. Scoffing at the world we have made for ourselves is all that we have left.
asks a lot of you since it's tough to know why anything's happening for about 3/4 of the movie. but it wraps up nicely and the opening sequence is outstanding.
This some dumb shit. The plot develops with all the grace of a GTA: San Andreas side-mission. That is, with humor and a certain charming clumsiness, barreling through incident after incident, without worrying too much about how those dots connect. The actors are all great, all very funny, all very much game. The movie looks amazing. But, again, it's dumb and way too long.
I watched this years ago but disliked it so much that I was compelled to come here and write this comment. The fact that I'm still thinking about it is not an endorsement. I detest this film.
Sad that this misfire is the sequel to one of the best movies ever made. Second half gets really unbearable with its nonsense plotting and espionage mumbo jumbo. Disappointing.
The film's achingly beautiful open heart makes it an undeniable success, but the last thirty minutes of this very long journey skirt dangerously close to mushiness and cliché. Fuck it. Who cares? The movie taught me not to be a grouch and I'm willing to forgive predictability in a story that's working within a well-worn sub-genre and doing it so effectively and affectingly. The three performances are beaming with life and truth-- I'd kill to see what becomes of these characters after the credits roll. This is a joyous ride and -while not among Payne's absolute best- definitely one of the year's most notable films.
