Don't believe the high ratings on IMDB: they are all fake accounts made by the director himself. This should already be a clear indicator of how pathetic this movie is. No, not satisfied? Do you want to hear more? Oh boy.
This film is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life, and I've seen A LOT of bad movies. Usually, in their ugliness, they are a pleasure to watch, but this one is beyond any form of self punishment. What baffles me is the paradox of its existance.
Usually there is a ground level of bad scriptwriting, because someone will always point out the most basic mistakes you made. This time it didn't happen. But the paradox doesn't stop here. With a screenplay this bad, how can you find money (1.8 million euros!) to produce (and distribute!) this film? How can you find people who believe in this project? And those (mostly fallen) stars, how could they agree to participate in such a mess of a movie? Are they so financially in crysis that they have to artisticly prostitute themselves?
Even with an awful script, there is always an opportunity to fix a film here and there, during production itself or later in the editing. Heck, at least make some pretty pictures to ease the pain. But no, none of this happened. Every aspect of this film, every shot, every cut, every line of dialogue, every music placement is a complete miss. And everytime the hammer misses the nail, it hits your finger.
The Broken Key keeps faith to its name, it is indeed a broken film, and should be a key one for any film student. Future directors, watch it, every DON'T to learn is there. And even though those two hours will feel like 20 of psychological torture, once it's finished, when the numbness is gone, you'll have the holy realisation that if Louis Nero managed to make a feature film, so can you too.
