Films with an explicitly progressive political message have had an interesting history within the Hollywood system and internationally.

Depending on the political climate of the time they can receive industry and even governmental support. During the 1930-50s European expats in Hollywood made several films with antifascist messages, for example. Only a few years later such films would be used against them as evidence of their Communist ties during the Red Scare, leading to the Hollywood Blacklist
