night of the living dead started the idea of zomies taking over, dawn of the dead expanded on the idea of a widespread takeover, day of the dead expanded on the effect it would have on people, and land of the dead focused on the zombies themselves. dawn of the dead had this queer upbeat feel about it, as beefen said.

I have often fantasized about holding up in a mall, kickin' zombie ass.

I was surprised how cheap the production felt and how high budget the story felt.

To this day, I can't look at a blood pressure kiosk without smiling. You may have to watch the extended cut "Ultimate Edition" (longer than the Director's Cut) to get my meaning.

I cannot believe I had not seen this movie until now. Easily the best and most entertaining zombie flick I've ever watched. Loved it! I'm gonna have to make a pilgrimage to the Monroeville Mall one of these days!

The best thing about the movie is the characters. I loved them, and when some of them died I got really emotional...
Great movie, much better than I expected. And even better than Night of the Living Dead.

A masterpiece. People who think this is just a dumb old horror movie need to give it a watch and see the great tension and themes this movie has.
The enemies are not the zombies ,but really the humans themeselves.

It's incredible how attitude/opinion can change in time - originally i found this film to be disappointing, but upon recent re-watch i find it very unique - hardy anything dislike-worthy about it.
That mall setting is such a great idea and do not accept those fast-moving zombies from remake. These ones are the real thing - and i say this as someone who enjoyed playing video game Left 4 Dead.

Original Night still remains a classic, not sure i would put it over or below Dawn,
but i will say this: colorized '68 original and Argento's edit/cut of Dawn are on the par in my world.

And, and, and... Day still remains my fave as it always has been.

While there are semi-gems from Romero like Martin,
it's his original Dead trilogy that is a real highlight of his filmography.

You've heard of slow burns, well Romero's Dawn of the Dead isn't THAT. We start in crisis mode and we hardly ever leave it. The apocalypse is in full swing, and we'll end up following a couple of television news people and a couple of deputized undead hunters. The eventual setting is a classic, the movie having fun with "mall zombies", but I'll admit I was a little tired of zombie-killing gags by the middle of the picture. There's so much of it, I'd almost call this a procedural. It's when it asks "what then?" that it gets interesting for me. How do you survive and even thrive during a zombie apocalypse once society has well and truly broken down. It's in that only "slow burn" portion that we really get to know the characters and care what happens in the action-packed third act. An often-emulated classic, but it still retains much of its power.
