More artisticly made than most slashers and with some psychological depth as well. Still, at its heart it is a gory slasher with some nasty Tom Savini special effects so anyone looking for a decent genre offering will be satisfied here. 11 years ago

Tom Savini's head blowing up was purely spectacular!
And perhaps the greatest moment in the film. Maniac is slightly monotonous and has a substantial amount of excessive breathing to cover for the lack of story line. It's pretty straightforward throughout, but enjoyable none the less.
