A crowd-pleasing movie-lover's movie whose sly references to films like "Citizen Kane" create more of a love-letter to movies in some ways than Scorsese's "Hugo". Jean Dujardin is fantastic in the silent lead - perfectly recreating the silent film era using modern film techniques. The film is every so close to being a film for the ages, but it ducks out of its more profound (and subtle) themes of capitalism, youth and renewal to reveal a largely empty story. Of anyone in the film, the dog, Uggie, might be most deserving of Oscar recognition. Absolutely deserving of its Best Picture nomination (announced today) for its wonderful filmmaking, and we'll see how it does on Awards night.

A gentle and sweet film about loss, humility, redemption, and the unspoken. I loved it!

Boring gimmick film. 2011 as a whole was a lousy year for movies made evident by this one.

I lasted 20 Minutes. Completely boring and pointless. What was all the praise about. Hollywood navel gazing.

Silent films are certainly their own genre. I feel there is enough which separates silents films from other films to justify this - there are plenty of tropes and techniques almost exclusive to silent film storytelling and film making.

Finally got around to watching this and I must say that it was not at all as good as I'd hoped. I loved the play with sound both in the dream sequence and in the final scene, it was absolutely brilliant. Other than that it wasn't really better than the old original silent films, more like a less interesting copy tbh, and the plot wasn't very good either. I understand it's supposed to be a homage to the old movies but simply mimicking them doesn't make it a good film. It just makes it seem uninspired and kind of lazy. Luckily both Dujardin and Bejo are lovely though, which made it fun to watch. :)

I totally agree with carolcoronado. Maybe it's well done and well shot and everything but the script is predictable and the old silent movies were quite (and when I say quite I mean VERY MUCH) better than this.

@ericaf: Never really thought of silents films as their own genre....

And that's because they're not!

I thought this film was well played out. I'm surprised I liked it so much considering I'm not entirely familiar with the genre from which it stems. Jean Dujardin is great :)

A silent film about a 1920's silent film actor and the advent of talkies. A witty, meta & entertaining Oscar winner. 8/10.
