An interesting and solid performance by Sir Anthony Hopkins, and he is far better than Mel Gibson. The rest of the cast are also good, but I think some characters, which I would have liked to see more of, doesn't quite get enough room, like the Daniel Day-Lewis character, for instance.

There is also a less melodramatic ending than in the version with Brando, which I think is for the best.

The third telling of the Bounty story is a good one and puts a new spin on some characters and adds fresh ideas to the mix. The mystique Vangelis score, the native nudity and subtle performances from a young Mel Gibson and an especially good Anthony Hopkins makes this a lot of fun to watch.

One of the better soundtracks by Vangelis.

It's interesting how a single story can be told in different lights to make the storyteller's points. Here we have a very moody telling that plays more with atmosphere than narrative-driven plot. And while other tellings emphasize the heroic overthrow of a vicious despot, here we see a much more even-tempered Bligh who borders on heroic. We also have a pretty strong opposition of strong leadership vs mob (or mass) rule. Don't believe it's the creators' intent to say one is categorically better than the other, only that both have strengths and drawbacks and prior tellings are a bit heavy-handed in which side they choose.

Gibson was clearly the biggest star of the cast though I can't decide if his performance was lackluster or restrained. Actually, besides Hopkins, not sure any of the actors are tasked to do much other than contribute to general atmosphere or move the plot along when needed.

Overall, interesting but otherwise, all told, a pretty average film.

This makes the 3rd version of the story that I've seen in the past week. It's a more modern take and being based on a different book than the original movie it understandably follows a different plotline. Anthony Hopkins brings what he can to the role but Gibson seems to suffer from overacting.

To add a touch of hilarity, I noticed it was rated PG and so figured there was no issue going into it. Umm... yeah, an R rating would have been more appropriate for the amount of skin being shown.

A generally very interesting movie, maybe not a must-watch, but doesn't get dull. My one main problem with it is that it feels like 70% of the movie was people screaming, either in celebration or in anger. That was pretty annoying. But oh well.
