Anyone claiming this to be on par with the original clearly hasn't seen the original in a loooooooonng, long time. This felt like old hat all over. Nothing was original at all.
Only for dyed-in-the-wool fans of the franchise, I'm afraid.
Style over substance for the most part. Top-notch editing and set designs, but the story is at best, weak and forgettable. Good to put on as you enjoy a drink or some food, but nothing to get excited over.
Shame, as I had this one in my watch list for months...
Started off as an interesting, albeit not particularly unique thriller/horror. After an hour it falls off a cliff and becomes a mishmash of the supernatural this and that, and ultimately raises more questions than it resolves.
badblokebob, my thoughts exactly. This is a very tidily executed thriller in the manner of Topkapi and others of the period. Though imperfect, it's very well made and incredibly fun to watch.
This is fantastic. It immediately calls to mind two films produced shortly thereafter, Seonsaeng Kim Bong-du (2003), and Ahobsal insaeng (2004) - both absolutely must-watch films for fans of Korean cinema (and suspiciously both absent from either of the top lists on ICM).
I really enjoyed it, though the sudden fluency of the Japanese proselytes did get on my nerves at times. Not exclusive to this film, I'm afraid. I wish Scorsese had made the choice to go with a more persisting language barrier as in the the little-known 'Mission'-like film 'At Play in the Fields of the Lord' (1991).
Evidently the movie that makes you seem like a super cool movie lover if you hate it. Keep the hate flowing, first year film students! The rest of us will simply enjoy the picture.
Like thecritico6, I was riveted for the first 45 minutes or so. I was willing to forgive the at times spotty acting up until that point, but afterwards it just sank lower and lower... and lower.
This should serve as an example of just how far a film can go down the tubes. From great to unbelievably bad in about 15 minutes.

Highly enjoyable card game/gambling movie. It felt like it went on for six hours - in the best of ways, not the worst.Movie comment on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Not terrible to be honest. Granted, it doesn't touch the original, though I'd certainly recommend a double bill of both films.Movie comment on Q & A

I believe Nolte as Brennan may very well be in the top three biggest dickhead detectives to ever appear on screen. What a glorious piece of shit.Movie comment on Pontypool
