the trailer made it look like some laugh-out-loud riot. i saw it and it most definitely was not a riot though it was really funny when it wanted to be funny and few movies, even those classified as "comedy" manage that. but is it a fantastic film about many things meta and psychopaths murdering each other? hell yes. i enjoyed the heck out of this film. it gave the same vibes as in bruges where many bad things happened but laughs were squeezed out even in those dark bits. this could have been shorter but excellent film nonetheless!

the cgi was fan-freakin-tastic. every single animal was cgi and it worked so damn well. i don't understand this logic of people complaining that there's too much cgi in movies. if they didn't have cgi, they wouldn't have been able to make this.
i don't ever take source material into consideration when watching a movie but to the readers of the book, as usual, a LOT of it is cut out but it's completely necessary because this is an un-directable film. there were very few logical places a movie based of a book which was primarily a narration could go. thankfully, what was left of the book was well directed, evoked strong emotional responses and was so beautiful.
my one beef is just how long the alternate story was. the focus of the book wasn't really this story and they put too much time into it, even if it was only 5 minutes. but on the whole, wonderful.

one major point which i highly appreciated was the amount of respect and dignity given to indian culture and religion. after slumdog millionaire practically ripped out the heart of all that was indian, stepped on it and fed it to bloodhounds, this movie was just so respectful, i was pleasantly surprised.
people expecting a rerun of the events in the book will be highly disappointed and quite shocked at how different it is. book movies are already looked down upon for the removal of many plot points but this movie adds so much to the original book in an effort to make it a trilogy, it's almost unrecognisable.
that said, this is an epic movie. the grandeur, the scale, the scope and the size of the ballad really shows with excellent cinematography, a thrilling soundtrack and a generally even pacing. the scene with gollum was incredible and kept me at the edge of my seat.
but some cracks do show. certain things make no sense, certain scenes with the dwarfs are goofy and unnecessary and some scenes drawn out. and i can see no future where a trilogy that has bastardised it's source material this much can win any oscars.
this movie may not live upto the standards of its predecessor and will leave diehard fans wanting. but on it's own it is spectacular and easily recommendable.

people complained about the use of time travel but imagine the shit it would have caused if used for other purposes. this was the safest most reliable way of making sure nothing happened
many layers to the story and excellent acting make this fresh and incredibly good. my only problem is how predictable this goes sometimes. certain things you just know will happen or will be revealed. and the makeup thing was amazingly well done.
