Agree the material does not stand the test of time, and the plot seems lifted straight out of a sitcom. But it's worth the price of admission just to see Cagney's tour de force comedic performance in the third act.

Seeing as this was originally a German TV mini-series, it is wrong to expect the pacing of a movie, much less an action movie. I saw the 209-minute version, and on it's own merits Das Boot is a superb teleplay.
