This movie is very disappointing. Over an hour and nothing really happens. Some interesting visuals but not a horror movie nor is it scary. It is one hour and 15 minutes of boredom and 10 minutes of an interesting movie. The last 10 minutes is basically the only part worth watching. The hour and 15 minutes leading up to the end is just boring. I can appreciate a slow burn horror movie or even just a slow movie, if it is good, like Blade Runner 2049, Visitors, The Prisoners, Dune (original haven't seen the new one yet), and many others that were very slow. But there is a big difference between slow and interesting and just straight up boring. So disappointing as I was very excited for this movie as the reviews had been raving about it, and how it was one of the best horror films of 2021. Skip it.
This movie is very weird Cats having sex, drinking with crows, dealing with racism and very cool animation, I have no idea what I just watched (:D) but found it very entertaining. THis movie is pretty entraining and weird but has a lot of good critique on america in the 60s and early 70s.

Like oh the lights are flashing, here comes a jump scare, it has been 5 minutes, here comes another jump scare/loud noise. The dialogue is as a low volume, so I true it up to hear the characters talking and jump scare LOUD NOISESSSSS. Which honestly got super boring halfway throught he film. I think the first half of the move has more jump scares than your average horror films. It does get brownie points for having a Jessica Chastain as a gorgeous guitarist of a band we never see. But overall the story moves at a dragged out pace with way too many jump scares. They don't spend enough time building up the atmosphere to make the movie creepy or even the jump scares scare you. There is no suspense to build up scenes before the movie tries to scare you. The slow burn was perfected in Hereditary and there are movies like the Conjuring that have very effective and great jump scares. But seriously relying on constant loud noise to scare the audience is just lazy. Startling you to get reaction isn't the same as scaring you. The CGI is also very laughable and I actually laughed out loud at the first few mama first person shots and when she crawled on the bed. Having a practical effect of mama and not relying on jump scares so much and just a creepy character, who have been 1000x times better and more effective. Insidious did this well, I don't know if it was CGI or practical but they had suddle scenes of the demon only half show or moving a creepy way, or in Running Scared (2006) scene with the
pedophilias and the shadows that played in the bathroom window scene
was creepier than this movie.Not to mention plot points that make no sense
like the uncle just leaving the hospital fully clothed and renting a car to go find the cabin without any issues after being in coma because he landed on his head on stairs for a few days
. Potentially good story poorly executed that would have been better as a short film with practical effects vs a CGI film.
TLDR: Skip this and see IT chapter one, even IT Chapter 2 is better than this. Really shouldn't be on any best horror lists.
All I can say about this movie is the stop motion animation was fantastic but not the movie for me. I didn't hate the movie but I didn enjoy it either. I guess Jan Svankmajer doesn't make my kind of movies. I have seen 3 if his so far and all 3 are extremely weird and slow. Greedy Guts was interesting and so far the only of his movies that I thought was good. But still very we weird. With this and Alice, I felt were just too slow and weird to be enjoyable and keep my attention. Perhaps if it was fast paced or shorter I would have enjoyed it more.

If you seen movies like The Omen, The Orphan,The Good Son, Rosemary's Baby, Home Movie, and few other classic horror movies you can skip this movie as you have seen everything that will happen in this movie. Typical no one believes anyone, everyone acts crazy or unrealistic, and things mysterious happen that no one seems to be able to figure out it was the kid that did it, like
the dog suddenly dies after it was walked by Joshua, grandma falls down stairs in public after Joshua almost pushes the daughter down the stairs, and the grandma cries out Joshua before falling but no one sees it, or a psychiatrist after 1 visit believes the child being abused because of one drawing, even though he has dead animals in his room and other more f'd up pictures that point to a psychopathic behavior. Terrible therapist, no one can make a diagnosis after 1 visit as people also lie.

The ending was bit unbelievable as well.
The dad gets accused of abusing the kid, so he just starts beating him up in public despite not showing any behavior of abusing anyone. I am sorry, but even if you are tired and angry and suspect someone of doing something bad, you don't just turn violent.Then he is arrested and the brother just gets custody of the kids and moves them out of the apartment? What there is no trial, or anything. The mother is in a mental hospital or something, and the dad is at best awaiting trial but can probably get bail as it is his first offense. So taking the kids under the bother, ok fine he has temp custody, but moving them out of the house and having movers seem to be packing everything come on. That doesn't even make sense.It is just like a couple of days after the incident. Also child services would take the kids away first, and have a therapist talk to them to see if the abuse was a pattern or at least investigate the home. But nope, just the brother gets the kids now and we are moving out. How is it no one sees the dead gerbils but the movers? Realistically child services and/or the police would have searched the home and see the kid was a psycho.
Overall very slow paced as well and not in an effective way. Don't get me wrong there are some great slow burn horror movies but this one just got boring.

Anyone who likes this over the original omen, should rewatch The Omen because this is not even in its league. While not a terrible movie, it is not one that should be on any best of horror lists. It is barely a horror or suspenseful movie. I guess if you never seen a movie like it, it could be scary or a horror film to you, but there are so many better films as well as ones with the same theme.
Also the end scene with the brother comes on suddenly, like the ending in Panic Room at the park, leaving you wonder what happened to the father, mother, the rest of the family, and how much time has passed since the park. But who cares, we got to set up for Joshua 2 right?
Overall skip it. I didn't hate it but I also have no interest in watching it again. I find it sad that movies like Hell House LLC, Home Movie, and other great horror movies are not on any lists and yet this movie is. Sure one day it will probably be bumped off a list but the fact that it is on a list this year but so many other great movies that are 1000x better then this aren't is just sad.

Then in the last 30 minutes there finally action. But overall very well made, with good customer and props and acting by the head hunter.

So after COVID grab some friends, some beers and have a good time instead of wasting your time on this crap. In fact avoid this "movie" it is so boring and has no plot. How Danzig for more money and good actors to be in his next movie I don't understand, clearly those actors and investor didn't see this one.
