Having miss- guessed a couple of twists lately (notably 'No Man's Woman') I'm afraid I'm going to say i saw this one coming well in advance.
(But I don't think I should get much credit for that.. it is rather obvious)
I never thought i'd find an ed wood in a Noir list.. but having seen this I see why...
Another of those gems in the dust.. and surprisingly 'only' in the one list.
A quick cheapy from Republic pictures.. but with Marie Windsor at her most dis-likable (character wise) I found this rushing past.
Marie Windsor, as Carolyn, takes centro stage for the first half seriously annoying the 5 or 6 other people till we come to the predictable 'gunperson in the shadow' and the cliche "What are YOU doing here? No, No -you mustn't..."
Bang bang..
And I was utterly wrong with my prediction as to who it was...
A good one.
We've all bought those box sets of 50 films crammed on to about 10 discs for about £10/£12. You know you have already seen 10, 15 maybe even 20 of them.. you also know another 10 will be real rubbish filler.. probably made for TV. You can be fairly certain that 10 or 15 will be quite acceptable stuff that would cost you £4 or £5 to buy alone.. that's why you bought the set.. But you also hope there will be.. maybe... 5 hidden gems, - something you hadn't heard of, that you couldn't find else where any way.
Especially if it's a set of (implied) Noirs.. most of which are only available at great expense on imported R1.
Well this was hidden away on '50 dark crimes', and almost warrants the purchase alone. (well, not really, the quality is poor, but hey, I got to see it).
The only real complaint maybe that you get the twist a tad too early.
Raises one very interesting and debatable question..
Just how much of a film do you have to see to count as 'seen'? If you spend most of it holding hands, books, whatever in front of most of the screen, or through half open eyes, and still looking away frequently.. have you 'seen' this film?
Don't care.. I suffered through this (so go ahead, call me a wimp), so I'm going to count it, despite having 'seen' very little...
I lost my gold award because 'The Lego movie' replaced .. something???
Well, at least 'adventure' is not one I'm overly bothered about, but sometimes one despairs.
Now write out 100 times "I must not take this seriously.. I must not....."
As I was rather surprised this had no comments and wasn't in a top list.. i thought I should say something.
Whilst certainly not a 'great' movie.. an efficient and entertaining war story that somehow manages to remain tense, despite knowing the ending.
(Spoiler? Oh come on, they are going to make a film called 'Sink the Bismark'.. and have it get safely back to port??)
As accurate as it could be at the time.. the real credit for the victory should go to the code breakers at Bletchley Park who pretty much knew where she was all the time. Details of this remained secret until quite recently.
I wish I'd seen the link earlier.. I had to buy the box set - imported from USA (to UK) to get this for my 1001 tick.. and really didn't like it.
But it got me to re-watch Beau Gest after 40 or so years...
Just to support dombrewer..
The sexiness portrayed was not much to my taste .. but it came over very well, as did the character of ms Page.. wonderfully portrayed.
And I totally agree with domb's comment about how sex is seen as much worse than violence on the screen...
.. I just feel a bit sorry for this film.. Only 4 checks.. no lists.. not even a picture..
I only saw it once, at time of release and remember enjoying it then.
(I gather it is not thought to be very good...)

Someone should say something about this film...It's essentials 'Casablanca'.. with a sea captain instead of Ingrid Bergman.. and a Lighthouse instead of a bar... but the effect is the same..
Deserves to be much better known.

As there seems very little information in the list..This is a surprisingly not very good British comedy from 1961 by Spike Milligan.

For anyone that may critisise 'list tickers'..I came to this because it was on 'The Guardian' top 100 list i am trying to tick off (just over 900 done).
it takes a bit of getting used to, but.. I grew to be quite charmed by it, and have already got 'Robinson in space' lined up...
